1. Master's Degree Programme

The MDP in Political Science continues to be among the most sought-after programmes being run by the University of Jammu in Jammu & Kashmir. Every year, the Department of Political Science receives a huge number of applications for MDP, which indicates that it is well received throughout Jammu & Kashmir. The students are admitted on the basis of entrance tests, and the ratio between the applicants and admitted students is 1/32. The curriculum of this program is designed to impart knowledge to the students through core courses, elective courses and open-choice courses. These courses cover the entire spectrum of disciplines such as Political Theory; Western & Indian Thought; International Relations & International Political Economy; International Organization and International Law; India’s Foreign Policy; Comparative Politics and Politics in South Asia; Indian Politics, State Politics & Political Economy; Public Administration and Indian Administration and Politics in Jammu & Kashmir.

2. M. Phil. Degree Programme

The Master of Philosophy Degree has been offered by the Department since its inception till its discontinuation by the UGC in the NEP-2020 in the light of its thrust area of research. Its major purpose was to train the students in the field of research. Its duration was two years, and it comprised two terms. The first term consisted of coursework wherein the knowledge about research methods & tools was imparted to the students by teaching a four-credit course on the Research Methodology. The specialization courses were also offered to develop the knowledge base of the student in the chosen area of specialization of M. Phil students. The examination of the coursework was done at the culmination of the first term. The second term was meant for the research report writing in the form of a dissertation on a specific assigned topic by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). The assigned supervisor used to supervise a student for his/her research work during the course of the second term, and the DRC used to monitor and mentor the students till the submission of his/her M. Phil. Dissertation, which was evaluated by internal as well as external experts

 3. Ph. D. Degree Programme

The Department has been offering the Doctor of Philosophy Degree Programme since its inception to promote its thrust area of research, which includes Indian Politics, State Politics and Jammu & Kashmir Politics; Comparative Politics & Politics in South Asia; Indian Administration and Jammu & Kashmir Administration, and International Politics and India’s Foreign Policy. Several scholars have received the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy awarded after the successful completion of their Ph. D. research work. They have conducted research on various topics of local, national and global importance.
