One Day Workshop on “Know Your Genes” Organized by Science Club, Utsaah during 10-Days Multi-Arts Fest “Protsaahan”

Science Club, Utsaah organized a one day workshop on “Know Your Genes” in collaboration with Department of Zoology, University of Jammu. It was a workshop cum awareness program for the youth and participants. 

 The welcome address was delivered by Prof. Satnam Kour, Chairperson, Utsaah, The clubs, University of Jammu. The event was hosted in Department of Zoology, University of Jammu. Chief Guest Prof. Naresh Padha, former DAA and Guest of Honor Prof. Seema Langer, Dean Life Sciences motivated the students in their address. Speaking on the occasion Prof Padha commended the efforts of the Coordinator Science Club and said that all the science fraternity should come together to develop  scientific temperament in all the students of the University.

 The invited speaker Dr Sawarkar Sharma, Director, Centre for Molecular Biology spoke about the human gene and its genetic make-up. He elaborated about the genes that makes what we are. With his long standing research work in the field of genetics he shared in-depth insights about life-style diseases for awareness among the audience. He further discussed personalized medicine and informed about designer babies.

 Dr Chinmoyee Maharana, Coordinator of Science Club gave a hearty vote of thanks to guests and participants. She explained the need of club activities much needed to engage students passionately outside the class-room and urged faculty members to motivate them to take part in such activities apart from the curriculum for an all-rounded growth.

 Among the eminent guests Prof. Namrata, Prof. Susheel Verma, Prof. Veenu Koul, Prof. Parmil, Dr Geeta Sharma, Dr Arti, Dr Parvinder, Dr Pankaj, Dr Raman. Inaugural session was conducted by Dr Sarabjeet Kour, Dept. The event was well perceived by scholars, students from various departments and students of DYD. The participants enthusiastically took part in Seminar Interaction with eminent guest speaker and dignitaries present, followed by laboratory visits where they were demonstrated about the isolation of DNA, gel electrophoresis and visualization techniques used for DNA or genes. They also participated in a gene model making competition in a group of four students. These models will be displayed in the BRSA auditorium ground on 24th Jan. on finale day along with prize announcements and certificate distributions.
