JU takes another step towards sustainable campus; foundation stone laid for storm water channel project

JAMMU, Aug 17: Taking another significant step towards sustainable and resilient campus infrastructure, the University of Jammu on Monday marked the commencement of the Sustainable Development of Storm Water Channel, with Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, laying the foundation stone of the project in the presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra. Dean Research Studies, Prof. Sangita Gupta, Dean Planning and Development, Prof. J P Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs, Rectors,Directors,HODs,Registrar and other Senior Officers of the University.

 

The project envisages restoration and upgradation of the nallah from the University Guest House to behind the Cricket Ground, Phase-I, and is being executed through the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), Sewerage and Drainage Circle, Jammu.

 

The initiative is aimed at streamlining storm-water flow and strengthening the drainage system in the area, particularly around the adjoining University residential quarters. It also complements the University's larger sustainability initiatives, including the proposed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) on the campus.

 

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Devansh Yadav directed the concerned officials to ensure quality in the execution of the project and remain in close coordination with the University authorities throughout the course of the work. Emphasising that an effective drainage system also requires regular upkeep, he instructed that suitable provisions be created at appropriate points along the channel to facilitate periodic cleaning and prevent choking, thereby ensuring its smooth functioning in the long run.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Umesh Rai expressed gratitude to Dr. Yadav and his entire team for taking the project forward.

 

Prof. Rai said the project was important for more than one reason. While ensuring an unhindered flow of storm water would help address drainage-related concerns around the adjoining residential quarters, the development would also complement the University's plans for effective wastewater management through the proposed STP.

 

Taking the sustainability vision a step further, the Vice-Chancellor proposed transforming the stretch into a potential source of renewable energy. He said the approximately 320-metre-long and 3.6m eter -wide section could be utilised for installing solar panels, enabling the University to generate a substantial amount of clean electricity while optimally utilising the available space

 

Prof. Rai sought the cooperation of the Jammu Municipal Corporation in exploring possibilities for supporting the proposed solar initiative, saying it could add another important dimension to the University's efforts towards building an environmentally responsible and energy-efficient campus.

 

The project reflects the University's continuing emphasis on integrating sustainable infrastructure, efficient water management, renewable energy and responsible utilisation of resources into its future development plans.

 

The ceremony was also attended by senior officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation and UEED besides other senior officers of the University,Office bearers of the University Associations and other members of the University fraternity.
