Department of Lifelong Learning (formerly known as Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension) was established in 1977 at the University of Jammu. The Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL) is offering various programmes to the learners thus strengthening teaching-learning processes through formal and non-formal educational methods.
For the past 40 years, DLL is educating, training and harnessing the capacities, knowledge and competence of teachers, students, youth and general population in Jammu province through its both formal and non-formal programmes. Not only the DLL prepares the students for the world of work through career counseling, remedial coaching, minority coaching and trainings, but it also plays a facilitative role in fulfilling social needs and human resource requirements by creating new learning opportunities. The DLL is also strengthening inter-sectoral coordination and partnerships between various agencies/sectors to meet diverse educational needs of target groups of learners of Jammu province.
EDUCATION ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
DLL is one of the unique departments in the entire Jammu province in any of the universities as it is not only a teaching department which offers a full time Masters degree programme in Rural Development started in the year 2013, but at the same time it is involved in various lifelong learning programmes, extension and outreach activities, career counselling programmes, equal opportunity programmes for the marginalized groups etc, which is truly unique to it as a teaching department.
THE DIVERSIFIED DLL
Apart from the regular teaching at DLL, the Department has diversified into various other activities which include continuing education programmes (primarily self-supporting courses for any age group), training programmes, workshops, knowledge, capacity and skill building programmes, income generating programmes, quality of life improvement programmes, the individual interest promotion programmes, counselling programmes, coaching, job-oriented courses and trainings. Additionally, it caters to the University/ colleges/ campuses/ 10+2 schools/ Non-students/ community/ Government and Non-Government agencies and individual interest groups.

COACHING UNIT
The DLL has a UGC Coaching Unit that provides coaching for competitive examinations to minority and SC/ST students free of cost. The DLL also provides coaching to general categories students on self-financing basis. The types of coaching at DLL are:

CAREER COUNSELLING CELL
The UGC has sanctioned a Career and Counselling Cell in the University of Jammu which has been established in DLL to address to the diverse needs of heterogeneous populations of the students. The functions of Career and Counselling Cell are
• To organise various programmes in the schools, colleges and University regarding various career options available before the students in different streams.
• To organise awareness programmes and guidance workshops for informing students about the emerging professional trends and events, job profiles, job avenues etc.
• To impart training in soft and communication skills.
• To organise programmes of entrepreneurship.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY CELL
• This Cell was given to DLL in 2012 and is emphasizing on the deprived groups for learning and creating space for them to mainstream in order to enhance the employability and success. The functions of this cell are:
• To ensure equity and equal opportunity to the students in the colleges and University.
• To create a socially congenial atmosphere for academic interaction and for the growth of healthy interpersonal relationships among the students coming from various social backgrounds.
• To make efforts to sensitize the students regarding the problems associated with social exclusion as well as aspirations of the marginalized communities.
• To sensitize the college and University students on the problems of SC/ST and other disadvantaged groups.
ADOPTED MODEL SCHOOL
The University of Jammu has adopted Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Satwari to provide meaningful support and inputs for its overall development. The main objectives are:
o To strengthen the academics by enhancing teaching-learning processes.
o To enrich the school environment by engaging teaching-learning processes.
o To conduct and strengthen career building programmes
Department of Lifelong learning is supporting this project by providing career counselling to the students by organizing Career awareness programmes; Skill based programmes and Computer programmes which are for broadening the minds of the students about the latest updations.
EXTENSION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMMES
Department of Lifelong Learning is also organising extension and outreach programmes for the community which include gender sensitization programmes.
EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION CUM ADVISORY BUREAU (EIAB)
The Employment Information Cum Advisory Bureau is the Counselling Unit of the Department of Lifelong Learning. The services rendered by EIAB are wide ranging. They are relevant to students needs in particular and public in general.
The tasks of EIAB are focused upon Information Networking/ Dissemination of Information, Guidance and Counselling Services, Career Development Programmes, Competency Building Programmes, Monthly News Letter, Publications of Career Booklets, Publicity and Advertisement in Newspapers and also on University website.
