Home Science is an applied discipline. It contributes to the improvement of quality of Life of individuals and families, which ultimately results in national development. Interdisciplinary field of Home Science contributes for the benefit of families and the community at micro and macro levels to gear the change and development in the desired direction. 

The Department of Home Science, University of Jammu has been offering Master’s Degree in Human Development and Doctoral Degree in Home Science since 1988, when it started in a few rooms atop the Department of Geology. The Department has come a long way to being recognized as one of the prominent Home Science Institution at the national level. Over the years, the students strength increased from 15 to 20 along with a considerable increase in the number of research scholars. It has developed linkages with state, regional and national level organizations like NIPCCD, NCERT, UGC, Mission Vatsalya, Mission Poshan. The Department excels in training human resources in various fields of Human Development like Early Childhood Care and Education, Disability Studies, Child and family welfare. Many of the alumni are well placed in Human Development related fields within and outside India bringing laurels to the Department.

 The Department has contributed to the scientific community through its publications and research activities which  have now been consolidated in development of five specialized laboratories: Development Stimulation Laboratory, Screening and Assessment laboratory, Health and Well- being laboratory, Outreach Laboratory, and Parenting and Family Research Laboratory.

 The major contribution of the Department has also been in establishing a centralized facility in the form of Surabhi Nursery School and Day Care Centre which is boon for the employees of the University of Jammu and its affiliated colleges.
