The P.G. Department of Home Science aims at “Overcoming underdevelopment and empowering individuals for societal excellence”. Home Science discipline integrates the application of knowledge synthesized from different sciences to improve human ecology. Human Development, Clothing and Textiles, Community Resource Management, Extension Education and Foods & Nutrition are the five basic branches of Home Science. Food Science & Technology is an associated applied off shoot of the discipline of Home Science. At present the Department of Home Science, University of Jammu offers Master’s and Research programmes. Main aim of this Department was to familiarize the students about both foundations and advances in human development, study of behaviour,organization and management of early childhood care and welfare institutions and human exceptionality. The department has both the expertise and infrastructure to help students opt for getting basic as well as advanced training/knowledge in various areas of Human Development. The Department equips the students with skills to pursue research and extend their knowledge to the community through seminars/workshops/conferences, field visits and extension activities.
In 1988 MDP in Human Development was started with total intake of 15 students. Later on the intake was increased to 20 students looking at the demand.Human Development is committed to improving the health and well-being of diverse individuals and families across the life span through research and preparation of post graduates and scholars for research, teaching, and professional practice.
