JU celebrates National Mathematics Day

Jammu, Dec 21: The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University of Jammu, celebrated National Mathematics Day, observed annually on December 22 across India, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of India’s greatest mathematicians and among the most brilliant minds in the history of mathematics. Born on December 22, 1887, in Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan is especially renowned for his extraordinary contributions to number theory and mathematical analysis.

 

Prof. Umesh Rai, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor,  University of Jammu, presided over the event and congratulated the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences for the successful organisation of the programme. He lauded the participation of students from various schools across the Jammu province in the Mathematics Quiz and appreciated the efforts of the organisers. Prof. Rai congratulated the winners and underscored the importance of experiential learning, while highlighting the growing relevance of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science in contemporary education and research.

 

Prof. Pragati Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Prof. Kumar congratulated the organisers and motivated students by emphasising the role of mathematics in academics as well as real-life applications.

 

Additionally, he appreciated the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences for initiating a Five-Year Integrated Programme at the University of Jammu.

 

Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, was also felicitated on being conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Indian Statistical Association. 

 

Prof. Jatinder Singh, Head, Department of Mathematics, Guru Nanak Dev University, attended the programme as the Guest of Honour and delivered the keynote address. He presented an insightful lecture on the life and works of Srinivasa Ramanujan, highlighting his remarkable ability to independently discover thousands of mathematical formulas and his major contributions to number theory, infinite series, mathematical analysis, continued fractions, and special functions. He also noted that despite having very limited formal training, Ramanujan’s genius was recognised by the renowned British mathematician G. H. Hardy.

 

Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs and Head, Department of Statistics, University of Jammu, also addressed the gathering and emphasised the importance of mathematical sciences in everyday life and the vast career opportunities in Mathematics, Statistics, and allied disciplines. 

 

Prof. Vinod Sharma shared details regarding the Mathematics Quiz, informing that the quiz was conducted in online mode on December 16, 2025, with participation from a large number of schools and students from across the Jammu province. 

 

Prof. Vibhakar Mansotra, Head, Department of Computer Science and IT, gave a detailed presentation on the newly introduced Five-Year Integrated PG Programme at the University of Jammu.

 

Earlier, Prof. Romesh Kumar, Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, formally welcomed the dignitaries and participants. In his address, he highlighted the history and significance of National Mathematics Day, making the programme both informative and inspiring.

 

The programme concluded with the distribution of awards and certificates to the winners of the Mathematics Quiz. Faculty members, research scholars, and students from the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science attended the event, along with students and staff from various participating schools of the Jammu province. Dr. Shallu Sharma presented the formal vote of thanks.
