JU organizes Workshop on Women’s Issues and Legal Rights at Kherian Village, Jammu

The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized a one-day workshop today, focusing on "Women Issues, Challenges, and Legal Rights" for members of the Self Help Group in Kherian Village, Ward No. 32, Gol Gujural, Jammu.

The event began with a warm welcome by Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, who highlighted the significance of the workshop. She provided an overview of the Centre's work and emphasized the importance of educating women about their rights.

In the first session, Ms. Kunzang Angmo, a lecturer at the Centre, discussed "Concept of Gender and Gender Issues." She explained how gender perceptions shape our daily lives, the impact of patriarchal ideologies on power dynamics, and the construction of gender roles.  She asserted that patriarchy, as an ideology, has established unequal power structures, resulting in power imbalances and inequality across different areas of society. She also provided an in-depth explanation of how gender is formed and how concepts of masculinity and femininity are developed and understood in society. She further elaborated on how societal expectations create stereotypical roles for men and women.

Prof. Savita Nayyar led the second session, covering "Legal Safeguards for Women." She provided insights into constitutional provisions and legal protections specifically for women.  Further, she also stressed about the importance of women’s education and how through education one can get more awareness on laws and different schemes available for the women and also suggested the ways to avail those facilities. She also emphasized on breaking the stereotypical ideologies and structures. Moreover it is the responsibility of both the parents to sensitize their children. 

The third session was delivered by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Lecturer, Centre for Women’s Studies on the theme: “Gender based violence with special focus on Domestic Violence and related PWDV Act”. She spoke about the concept of domestic violence and its types.

While engaging the women she explained how domestic violence as a whole carry a stigma in the society as well as considered to be a private affair, rather it is a social issue which need to be openly discussed and one can seek help if needed. Dr. Kaur explained the provisions of the PWDV Act and the support available under it.

The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from the women, who shared their experiences and asked numerous questions, which were addressed to their satisfaction. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Saranjit Kaur.
