On the occasion of National Girl Child Day (24th January), the Centre for Women’s Studies in collaboration with Office of Program Coordinator NSS, University of Jammu organized an Interactive Session/Public Lecture on the theme ‘Rethinking Women Led Development on National Girl Child Day’ for the students & scholars of University of Jammu on 24th January, 2024.
The program began with the welcome address by Dr. Hema Gandotra, Programme Coordinator, NSS and In-charge Director, Centre for Women’s Studies who after welcoming the participants gave the brief introduction on the importance of National Girl Child Day as well as briefed about the workings of the Centre.
National girl child day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India in 2008 with the purpose to spread awareness among people about all the inequalities girls face in the society. This mission also aims to raise the awareness among people all over the country to promote awareness about the rights of the girl child as well as the importance of girl’s education, health, nutrition and safety.
Dr. Nancy Mengi, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Social Work, Central University of Jammu the key resource person began the session by throwing light on the importance of celebration of National Girl Child Day. During her session she explained the reason for declining sex ratio of the Girl child. Further she engaged the students in an activity to make them understand the concept of Gender, Gender Socialization and Gender Stereotypes. She also highlighted the process of socialization which inculcates the different gender roles and therefore, different gender expectations are put on the individual. Further she talked about women’s emancipation, women’s empowerment, women’s development and also shared the different schemes run by the government in favour of women.
Large number of Students from the various departments of University of Jammu very actively participated in the workshop. They very enthusiastically shared their views and observation. The program was coordinated and conducted by Dr. Saranjit Kaur and formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo, both faculty members of the Centre for Women’s Studies. Among others, Dr. Anjuman Ara, Associate Professor, Centre for History and Culture of Jammu & Ladakh Region was also present on the occasion.
