Report on M.Sc. Zoology Students' Visit to Mansar Lake (Teacher Incharge: Dr. Rakesh Kumar & Dr. Sarbjeet Kour)
On 7th March 2025, the students of M.Sc. Zoology (Semester 2 and Semester 4) visited Mansar Lake for a picnic, accompanied by faculty members. The visit provided an opportunity for students to relax, bond, and explore the natural beauty and biodiversity of the lake. During the visit, students observed the aquatic ecosystem, avian diversity, and the surrounding flora and fauna, which complemented their academic learning. The faculty members and Teacher Incharge, Dr. Rakesh Kumar and Dr. Sarbjeet Kour, ensured a well-organized and engaging experience for all participants. The day was filled with recreational activities, group discussions, and nature walks, allowing students to appreciate the ecological significance of Mansar Lake. Everyone enjoyed the serene environment and had a memorable time together.
Four-day workshop on “Peace Education” inaugurated at University of Jammu
The Department of Zoology, University of Jammu successfully organized a four-day workshop (4th to 7th March 2025) on Peace Education in collaboration with the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Jammu, and the Department of Pediatrics, SMGS Hospital, GMC, Jammu in association with EQRA Foundation, Jammu EQRA foundation. This initiative was conducted under the Mission Program on Pediatrics Rare Genetic Diseases funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi, Govt. of India.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Umesh Rai underscored the significance of peace education in today's rapidly changing global landscape. He emphasized that peace cannot be attained solely through education but must be cultivated from within individuals. Prof. Rai further noted that in an era where young minds are inundated with vast amounts of information, their learning process is often disrupted, leading to confusion and chaos. He stressed the importance of fostering inner peace and resilience to navigate the complexities of modern life effectively. He also emphasized on the teachings of Sri Aurobindo for peace and harmony.
Professor Yashpal Sharma (Dean of Life Sciences) highlighted a traditional approach to peace, emphasising the recitation of Gitas Shlokas. He also emphasized on the significance of interdisciplinary collaborations in promoting peace education.
All the dignitaries on and off the dais, heads of various departments (Dr. Susheel Verma, Botany; Prof. Sanjana Koul, School of Biotechnology), senior Professors (Dr. Namrata Sharma, Prof. Jyoti Vakhlu and Dr. Pankaj Kumar), faculty members (Dr. Sarbjeet Kour, Dr. Amit Gupta, Dr Arti Dogra, Dr Parvinder Kumar, Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Ripu Daman and Dr. Chinmoyee Maharana) of the department and Life Sciences and participants attending the workshop were warmly welcomed by Prof. Seema Langer (HOD, Zoology and convenor of the workshop). She emphasized the significance of education in fostering peace and progress and expressed her gratitude to co-convenor and organizing secretaries of the workshop along with the EQRA Foundation for their support in organizing this valuable session. During her address, Prof. Langer highlighted the importance of understanding genetic disorders, explaining how they impact individuals and communities. She stressed the need for skill-based awareness and research in this field. The workshop aimed to provide insightful discussions and enhance knowledge on genetic disorders, encouraging participants to actively engage and learn enhancing their hands-on experiential learning.
Prof. BK Bajaj (co-convenor) in his address emphasised the significance of peace in today's world, highlighting the prevailing chaos and conflict and also underscored the significance of mental well-being, especially in the context of rare genetic disorders and healthcare challenges.
Simran Kaur, co-founder and President of the EQRA Foundation, highlighted the organization’s vision, origins, and mission in her address. Founded in 2020, the EQRA Foundation is a civil society organization committed to fostering conscious and mindful living through initiatives centred on Mental Health, Peace Education, and Religious Pluralism in Jammu and Kashmir, India.
The workshop brought together experts, scholars, and students from various disciplines to engage in discussions and activities aimed at promoting peace, understanding the holistic well-being. Through interactive sessions, participants explored the role of education in fostering a culture of peace and harmony in society.
The University of Jammu continues to spearhead such initiatives to enrich academic discourse and contribute positively to societal development. The workshop served as a platform for meaningful dialogue and the exchange of ideas, furthering the institution’s commitment to education and human values.
Awareness cum Registration CAMP (AADHAR, ABHA, PAN Card)
The Zoology Department in collaboration with Dean Student welfare, University of Jammu and National Board for worker education and Development, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India successfully conducted an Awareness cum Registration Workshop (dated 20th January 2025, Time 1 pm onwards) for AADHAR, ABHA Card, and PAN card. Prof. Seema Langer, Head of the Department of Zoology, welcomed the resource person, Dr. Pankaj Joshi (Regional Director), for an awareness program on Aadhaar, PAN, and ABHA cards. In her address, she highlighted the significance of such awareness programs in educating individuals about the importance and benefits of these essential identity and health-related documents. The primary objective of the workshop was to facilitate students and employees in understanding the importance of these essential documents and to assist them in the registration process. The workshop witnessed active participation from students, faculty members, and administrative staff. A good number of participants attended the event and availed of the registration services. Dr. Pankaj Joshi, voluntarily participated and his active involvement served as an encouragement for the attendees, emphasizing the importance of these essential documents and the need for timely registration. The objective of the workshop is to create awareness about the significance of AADHAR, ABHA Card, and PAN for academic, professional, and personal use. In addition, it provided on-the-spot registration services for those who have not yet obtained these documents and also address the queries and concerns regarding document updates and corrections.
Workshop/Demonstration on Biochemical Analyzer (Erba, TransAsia)
A workshop and demonstration session (Dated 20th January 2025; 11:30 am) on the biochemical analyzer (Erba, TransAsia) was successfully organized to familiarize all relevant personnel with its features, functions, and operational procedures. The session provided a comprehensive overview of the analyzer, covering its technical specifications, capabilities, and applications in biochemical testing. The resource personnel (Mr. Joginder, Clinical Biochemist) demonstrated the step-by-step process of operating the analyzer, including sample preparation, calibration, and data interpretation.
Participation of Zoology Students on National Bird Day 2025
On 10th January 2025, students from the Department of Zoology actively participated in the National Bird Day 2025 celebration organized by DEERS EIACP HUB, JK in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. The event commenced at 11:00 AM at the Environment Park, Raika, Jammu. The program aimed to raise awareness about bird conservation, habitat protection, and the importance of ecological balance.
CONSTITUTION DAY CELEBRATION
On November 26, 2024, the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu celebrated Constitution Day with active participation from students, teachers, and staff members. The event underscored the importance of the Indian Constitution and its foundational values of justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. As part of the celebration, a special screening of a movie related to Constitution Day was organized. The screening aimed to educate and inspire the attendees, deepening their understanding of constitutional principles.

The inauguration of the International Conference on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Reproduction: Exploring New Frontiers, organized by the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu, India, under the auspices of the Indian Society for Comparative Endocrinology, ISCE graciously inaugurated today on October 22, 2024. An initiative of the Department of Zoology, the conference was attended by more than 150 participants from across the globe. The conference was inaugurated by the honourable Shri Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai (Vice chancellor, University of Jammu), Prof. Bechan Lal (President, Indian Society for Comparative Endocrinology, ISCE, and Ex-Vice chancellor, Cluster University), who addressed the participants and highlighted the activities of the most recent developments in the endocrinology field and also provided an opportunity to have close interactions with some of the best brains working in the field around the globe. This conference introduced the theme related to emerging technologies and novel approaches in endocrine studies, brain-body interactions, hormone signalling and interactions, and metabolic and reproductive health. Thus, the conference will provide a forum for scientists across the globe to exchange their ideas with peers and stay abreast of breakthroughs in basic and clinical research as well as in translational medicine. More than 150 participants will be presenting their research during various session planned (63 poster presentation, 24 oral presentation, 15 special talk, 13 invited talk, 11 Plenary talk and 01 key note and culture evening by J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages). This international event is landmark in the academic calendar of the department of Zoology, University of Jammu.

The department recently organized a vibrant and engaging fresher party to warmly welcome the new batch of students (M.Sc. Zoology, Batch 2024-2026). The fresher party for the juniors turned out to be a grand success, with senior students warmly welcoming their juniors and inviting the faculty members to join in the celebration. The event showcased a variety of performances, including energetic dances, melodious songs, and entertaining skits, performed by both juniors and seniors, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. The highlight of the event was the presence of the Head of Department (HOD), who praised the efforts and coordination of the senior students for organizing such a memorable event. The HOD, in her speech, emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy and inclusive environment in the department, where respect, collaboration, and mutual support are key values. Department of Zoology, University of Jammu organised a lectures for PG students and research scholars. At the outset, Prof Seema Langer, Head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Jammu, welcomed Dr. Vinod Kumar during a significant academic event. Faculty members and students gathered to attend and witness Dr. Kumar's lecture.
The primary aim of the event was to invite the resource person i.e. Dr. Vinod Kumar to speak on key topics in endocrinology, focusing on hormones and their impact on stress management. In addition, we sought Dr. Kumar’s guidance for our PhD scholars regarding research proposal writing and navigating the complexities of modern scientific research.

The flag hoisting event was organized by the Department of Zoology to honor our national heritage and foster a sense of patriotism among students and faculty. Faculty members, students, and staff gathered for the flag hoisting. The ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Prof. Seema Langer (HOD, Zoology). The ceremony was accompanied by the singing of the national anthem performed by the students and faculty members. Following the main program, sweets were distributed to all attendees as a gesture of celebration.

The Department of Zoology organized an induction programme on August 1, 2024, in the seminar hall. The aim of this programme was to welcome the newly enrolled M.Sc. students in the department and introduce them with the available resources and the Faculty. On this occasion, Prof. Seema Langer, Head of the Department, emphasized the importance of academic rigour, research opportunities, and the overall development of students. Her speeches typically highlight the curriculum structure, the available resources, and the support systems in place to help students succeed in their postgraduate studies. These induction programmes are designed to help new students feel welcome and motivated as they embark on their academic journeys. They also serve to inspire students by showcasing the achievements of the university's alumni and the potential career paths available to graduates.
During the induction programme, one of the alumni (Aditi Singhal, M.Sc. Zoology, Batch 2019-2021), a gold medalist and JKAS qualifier, interacted with our new students and shared her experiences regarding academics and narrated the struggle behind her success story. Her presence encouraged and motivated the students who are at the beginning of their journey. The department proudly honored for her success and wished her good luck ahead. The programme was also attended by all the faculty members, research scholars and students.

Observance of Silence on 30th January 2024 (Martyr’s Day) in the memory of those who sacrificed their lives during struggle for India’s Freedom by Department of Zoology.
On Martyr’s Day Department of Zoology, University of Jammu observed silence for two minutes at 11:00 am to pay homage and to remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters. In this connection, a documentary entitled “Azadi-A tribute to India’s Great Freedom Fighters” was also showcased in the seminar hall of Department of Zoology and was seen by students, Research Scholars, non teaching and teaching Faculty members of the department generating a wave of patriotism in the Hall.
Department of Zoology hosted one day workshop on “Know Your Genes” on 23rd Jan. 2024.
It was organized by Science Club, Utsaah, University of Jammu. This workshop cum awareness program for the youth and participants. The invited speaker Dr Sawarkar Sharma, Director, Centre for Molecular Biology spoke about the human gene and its genetic make-up. He elaborated about the genes what makes what we are. With his longstanding research work in the field of genetics he shared in-depth insights about life-style diseases for awareness among the audience. He further discussed about personalized medicine and informed about designer babies.
The event was well perceived by scholars, students from various departments and students of DYD. The participants enthusiastically took part in Seminar Interaction with eminent guest speaker and dignitaries present, followed by laboratory visit where they were demonstrated about the isolation of DNA, gel electrophoresis and visualization techniques used for DNA or genes. They also participated in gene model making competition in teams of students.
Department of Zoology organized Educational tour to Bangalore, Mysore and Coorg.
An educational tour as a part of academic curriculum was organized by department of Zoology University of Jammu w.e.f. 14th to 24th of January 2024 for MSc III Sem students. A total of 25 students under the guidance of Dr Ripu Daman Parihar, teacher incharge visited many places of scientific and academic importance in southern India. The aim of this tour was to explore the Biodiversity, learn about aquatic flora and fauna of the region. The students visited many places like Zoo, Bird Sanctuary, Science Musems, dams, waterfalls etc. Besides this, they explored the rich heritage of Mysore, Karnataka where they visited Tipu Palace, Mysore Palace, Vrindaban Gardens, IScon Temple and the Great Buddhist Golden temple in Coorg. The tour was successfully conducted and the students were very happy because most of them got this opportunity to visit South India first time in their life and are expected to submit report of the same.

On 30th November,2023, as an outreach activity under lab to land initiative department of Zoology, University of Jammu organized one day awareness programme on Honey Bee farming in collaboration with Khadi and Village industries commission, Govt. of India at village Gowar, panchyat Sarwal, Tehsil Pargwal, Jammu.The objective was to spread awareness among farmers of border area about scope and benefits of bee farming. The programme was executed by coordination between Yashpal Singh, Deputy Director ,KVIC, Govt. of India, H.S.Ghurdaura, executive bee keeper, Dr. Ripu Daman Parihar, Assistant Professor, Zoology, University of Jammu along Sh. Bopinder Singh, Sarpanch, Parduman Singh ,panch Sarwal panchayat. More than 60 farmers including females were given the knowledge and they enthusiastically accepted the option of honey bee farming for self employment. They were also informed about various subsidy schemes of government to take up this as a start up.

Butterflies play an important role in ecosystem. The students grabbed this opportunity and learnt many things related to this beautiful creature. The students showed keen interest in the festival and learnt about their puddling behaviour, egg laying and various developmental stages. All the students were very happy , enthusiastic and determined to play their role actively for protecting beautiful nature around us.

Department of Zoology conducted a sanitation drive at Mcleodganj, Himachal Pradesh. Students of the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu, as a kind gesture to pay respect to the beauty of nature conducted a cleanliness and awareness drive at Mcleodganj, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, where they had gone for a field collection trip on 22 nd of May 2023. Local residents and many tourists applauded the initiative and good work done by students and also complimented the guidance of accompanying teachers, Dr. Rakesh K Panjaliya and Dr. Pankaj Chibber.

Department of Zoology. University of Jammu, celebrated world honey bee day and organized a lecture and hands on training on the topic: Bee engaged in pollinator-friendly agricultural production.The lecture was delivered by an eminent worker and researcher in this field Dr.Devinder Sharma, Associate Professor, Head AICRP honeybee and pollinators division of Entomology, SKUAST- Jammu. For the function formal floral welcome to the guest was given by Dr.Arti Sharma of Zoology Department. Speaker during his lecture gave a detailed insite into beekeeping, specially economic benefits of this field as an entrepreneur option. He also motivated students to be messengers in society and tell people of the benefits of honey and honeybee keeping. Hands on demonstration of beekeeping was also given in the zoological park of the university , where bee boxes have been installed. The program ended with a vote of thanks to the speaker and participants.
Entrepreneurship Skill Enhancement workshop was organized by the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu
Department of Zoology University of Jammu in an attempt to inculcate entrepreneurship skills among students organizes one day workshop on “Solid Waste management: An ecofriendly preposition” on 25th of April 2023. Prof. S S Hundal, former Head, Department of Zoology, PAU Ludhiana was the resource person for the workshop. Prof. Hundal is an eminent scientist and expert in the filed of vermicompost. He elaborated and disseminated the practice and procedure of vermicompost set up as a prominent means of solid waste management and as a potential entrepreneurial venture. He also motivated the students to realize the economic benefits of vermicompost set up. The workshop was attended by the students and research scholar of the zoology department.
Department of Zoology organised Induction programme for Freshers 15 Dec 2022
Student’s Induction Programme for newly admitted students in first semester of M.Sc Zoology was organised by the department of Zoology, University of Jammu. The event took place in the seminar hall of the department and was attended by the M.Sc 1st Semester students, parents of the students, teaching and non teaching faculty of the department. Mrs. Anuradha thakur (JKAS), BDO, Hirangar, an alumna of Department of Zoology was special guest for the occassion. She shared her experiences with the students and guided them for career perspectives. She also emphasised on need of hard work for pursuing career goals. Mrs. Thakur expressed her gratitude to the department of zoology for shaping her future and to help her excelling in life. Words and story of success attributed to department of zoology by Mrs. Thakur impressed students to the extent that few of the newly admitted students stood up and expressed their happiness to be a part of this prestigious department. Earlier, at start of the event, Prof. Seema Langer HOD, Zoology and Dean, Life sciences welcomed all the newly admmitted students to the department of Zoology and gave an elaborated overview of the course currilculum, programme offered, thrust research areas and achivements of the department. The department of Zoology, University of Jammu organized an invited talk on the topic “Intellectual Property Right and Ethics: What Researchers need to Know”. Prof Kalpana Pai, Former Head, Savitri Bai Phule University, Pune, was the resource person who delivered the talk through online platform.

Department of Zoology, University of Jammu celebrated constitution week in the seminar hall of the department. To commemorate the making of constitution of India, two documentaries on “Making of Indian Constitution” by Sansad TV were screened for the students and research scholars of the department. During the event, Prof. Seema Langer, HOD and Dean, Life Sciences apprised the gathering about the importance of Constitution of India and encouraged the students to participate and celebrate the constitution week of India. The programme was attended by the students, research scholars, faculty and non-teaching employees of the department.

The Department of Zoology, University of Jammu today organized Parisar Safai Abiyan at Zoological Park of University of Jammu. The students of M.Sc 3rd semester, non-teaching staff and faculty of the department of Zoology participated in cleaning drive of the park where the new initiative for establishment of butterfly park has been initiated. Head of the Department and Dean Life Sciences Prof. Seema Langer looked over the event and appreciated the efforts of the students and the staff.
The Department of Zoology, University of Jammu, organized a 7-day Workshop on “Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Techniques” from 14th –20th Nov. 2022, sponsored by DST under the STUTI programme in collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat which concluded on 20th November. Prof. Seema Langer, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, welcomed the guests on valedictory function and congratulated all the delegates on successful hands-on training on AAS and PCR techniques. The Convener of the workshop Dr. Arti Sharma, Senior Assistant Professor, presented a report on 7 day workshop detailing events of sessions conducted each day.
The honourable Chief Guest Prof. M. K. Dhar, Former Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, and Professor, School of Biotechnology congratulated the department for its efforts on organizing a hands-on training on these very relevant techniques of AAS and PCR. Guest of Honour, Senior Prof. S. Jithender Kumar Naik, Dept. of Zoology, University College of Science, Osmania University, Hyderabad congratulated the organizers and the participants.
The participants shared their views and feedback of their learning experience during this workshop. They found it very fruitful and mentioned how this hands-on training is going to help them in teaching and research, and developing networking.
As a part of extension activities for the welfare of Farmers/Rural Communities, department of Zoology, organized a Farmers Interaction cum Awareness Programme “From Lab to Land” on 3rd Nov. 2022. In this programme more than 20 farmers under the banner Border belt Kisan Committee (BBKC) participated.
