A two day online workshop on “DNA Isolation, Diversity Assessment and Analysis using ISSR markers in plants” under SERB Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) Policy commenced at the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, Jammu in online mode. Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest at the Inaugural Function. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dhar appreciated the efforts of the Department of Botany for organizing the workshop for the College teachers. He said that this event will provide a golden opportunity to the participants to learn the practical exposure of the latest DNA isolation techniques for assessing and analyzing genetic diversity in different plant taxa. Further, Prof Dhar emphasized on the importance of learning new techniques by the College teachers for effective implementation of the National Education Policy in their respective colleges. The workshop is being organized by Dr. Geeta, Principal Investigator (PI), under SERB funded project entitled ‘Assessment of cytological, biochemical and molecular variability in viola species from Jammu and Kashmir’. Objectives of the workshop under SSR are to transfer expertise gained by the PI during the project to the teachers of nearby colleges.Earlier Prof. Veenu Kaul, Head, Department Botany, and convener of the workshop welcomed the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, faculty and participants. Prof. Kaul highlighted the endeavors of the Department in organizing various academic and research programs in the recent months for improving the skill of the teachers in the nearby colleges. On the occasion, Dr. Geeta, Assistant Professor and Organizing Secretary of the workshop informed the august gathering about the objectives of the SERB sponsored workshop. Dr. Geeta informed that 25 teachers have registered for this workshop as per the mandate of the SERB. She informed that there will be seven experiments which will be video graphically demonstrated to the participants in lecture sessions. Dr. Susheel Verma, Dean and Head, Department of Botany, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri will deliver lectures on advanced topics along with practical demonstrations. Prof. Seema Langer, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences; Head, Department of Zoology and Coordinator, Institute of Human Genetics was the Guest of Honour. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Langer spoke on the theme of understanding different technologies and their applications in optimizing the present methods of teaching and research. This event was attended online by the faculty members of the Department of Botany including Prof. Geeta Sumbali, Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Prof. Namrata Sharma, Dr. Sikander Pal, Dr. Harish, Dr. Skarma, Dr. Harpreet and Dr. Madhu Raina. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Sikander Pal, while proceedings of the event were conducted by Dr. Madu Raina.
