University of Jammu kick starts its innovative ‘Waste to Wealth’ Initiative

Department of Environmental Sciencesand Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU), University of Jammu under its ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative organized a one-day extension programme on upcyclingof Sticks and Twigs lying as waste in the lawns and gardens of the University. The students and volunteers from the Department were divided into groups and were made to collect the sticks and twigs from the University campus.They showcased their creativity and talent byformingalphabets out of sticks and twigs under the supervision of Mr. Vikas Khajuria, Waste Sculpture Artist. These alphabets werethenused to write the name of the Department on the outside fence of the Department.The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the students and volunteers. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Headof the department said that since the University campus has been declared a green campus, all these initiatives at the University level will contribute towards improving environmental sustainability under the Mission LiFE initiative of the government.‘The active participation of the students makesthem environmentally consciousasit helps themto understand the importance of conservation, recycling, and upcyclingin our daily lives’, Dr. Deepika Slathia, the teacher in charge of the event said.She added that similar concepts using other types of waste materials shall be replicated in other departments of the University.Among others who participated in the event included Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria, Dr. Ravinder and Dr. Ranjan Sharma.

‘Save Tawi Campaign’ organized byUniversity of Jammu

Jammu, Dec 06: Department of Environmental Sciences&Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU),University of Jammu organized ‘Save Tawi Campaign’ on the banks of River Tawi during the last day of Navratri festival. The purpose of this campaign was to sensitize public about the importance of Tawi river and the causes and consequences of immersion of plastic material along with the Khetri and the unscientific disposal of waste into River Tawi. The students also talked about the potential solutions and benefits of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Head Department of Environmental Sciences, stressed on the adoption of adequate measures and techniques for the protection and conservation of Tawi River which is the lifeline of Jammu. Dr. Deepika Slathia, Member Secretary, GCTF-JUsaid that the university is committed to provide all the necessary supportin the form of awareness drives to clean river Tawias well as conducting research to save its ecosystem by ensuring free flow of water. She urged people to stop use of single-use plastic to contain menace of plastic pollution.The studentsand volunteers were divided into groups and each group interacted with the public and made them aware regarding the harmful effects of waste especially the use of plastic material and gave them easy solutions for effective management of such type of wastes.Among others who participated in the event included Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Ravinder, Dr. Ranjan and Dr. Meenakshi.
