To commemorate celebration of Constitution Day a Symposium on “Constitution And Gender Equality” is organized in The Law School, university of Jammu on 28th November, 2023. The symposium commenced with the pledge taken by the faculty and students of the department by reading the Preamble of the Constitution.
Dr Monika Bhardwaj, Assistant Professor welcomed the gathering and deliberated on the theme and highlighted on the essence of our collective endeavours and objective to achieve gender equality.
Prof. Manju Jamwal, Director The Law School delivered the Presidential Address. She highlighted the importance of goals of Equality of Status and Opportunity read with Justice to all as enshrined in the The Preamble of the Constitution of India and spoke at length about many gender specific legislations and contribution of judiciary in maintaining gender equality jurisprudence in India. Stressing upon the need to follow fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution, she emphasised the need to have gender sensitive society.
The programme was followed by participation from the students on the said theme of the Symposium. The participants discussed in depth into the constitutional provisions on gender equality. Dr. Seema Sharma, Associate professor gave an insight into the widening gender gap in India even after adoption of various provisions and schemes for women empowerment. Dr Monica Narang, Associate Professor emphasised the need for the right kind of education to prevent the reinforcement of gender-stereo-types.
A formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Nitin Sharma, Assistant Professor. The programme was attended by around two hundred students and faculty members of the department.
