Introduction
The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1999 under the aegis of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, University of Jammu, Jammu which was later shifted to the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department offers Post Graduate Programme through the semester system and has been running regular M.Phil (till 2021) and PhD programmes since the year 2002. The department introduced the Choice Based Credit System in the 2014-15 session. Many students of the Department have cleared NET/SLET/JRF and have been placed in various teaching departments as well as other government and research-oriented non-government jobs. Some have been awarded higher degrees in prestigious institutions in India and abroad.
The Department is committed to catering to the academic and professional needs of the students with the following mission:
To cultivate adaptation of ethics, morality and healthy practices in professional life and to establish and promote close interaction with society and other cultures in order to create awareness about the social and physical environment.
