Introduction

department

The Department of Physics was established in 1967 under University of Jammu and Kashmir (Jammu Division) and became part of University of Jammu in 1969. At present department offers four specializations in the front line areas of research. The department is well equipped with necessary facilities and resources for teaching, higher learning and research. Each of the research laboratories is equipped with state of art research facilities. Our post graduate laboratories offer a comprehensive range of equipment allowing students to explore some of the most modern concepts in physics.

Research activities of the department in four different specializations involve work of international level. All research groups have formal and informal collaborative work with the other institutes/universities of the country and have publications in the wide spectrum of peer reviewed journals from these collaborative work. The collaborative activities lead to overall development of the faculty as well as department. Students as well as faculty visit the research laboratories outside the state and country for research related activities

The department has a Master's degree program which is at par with national curriculum designed by UGC for Indian Universities. Syllabus revision takes place on a regular basis with the feedback from students and experts, The syllabus framed is competitive in nature with international standards. Course contents are enriched with the topics and material from the active and current fields of research and technology of nano-technology, quantum chromodynamics, research in the field of heavy ion physics, solid state materials, and communication electronics. Research Methodology and Research Ethics courses are an important introductory courses in the doctoral degree programs.

New methods and tools of teaching, learning and evaluation process are introduced from time to time as per the requirement. Students of post graduation get benefited by this directly as well as indirectly. To make the students of post graduation aware of the cutting edge research being carried out at international level special lectures are being arranged in the department from the eminent speakers and scientists. Department has two classrooms and two seminar halls which are IT-enabled with high speed internet connectivity and smart boards. There is one computer Lab (under FIST programme) for the students of various degree programs for IT/internet support. Wi-Fi connectivity is offered to all the research scholars in the department. The labs have connectivity to the central Library of the university from where students/scholars can access INFLIBNET. Teachers use ICT-enabled tools for teaching as audio-video support wherever required. Under the outreach activity department recently organized International Masterclasses in Particle Physics where students got the opportunity to have a virtual tour of the ALICE experiment at CERN.  Various days of International and National importance like Teacher's Day, National Science Day etc are observed and activities are arranged.
