The purpose of this campaign was to sensitize public about the importance of keeping Tawi river clean, and the causes and consequences of immersion of plastic and other materials along with the Khetri into the River. The students and volunteers were divided into groups and each group interacted with the public and made them aware regarding the harmful effects of waste especially the use of plastic materials and gave them easy solutions for effective management of such type of wastes. The students also collected the materials like chunri, coconuts, pots, plastic waste etc., from the devotees and segregated it, and allowed only the immersion of Khetri into the river.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Head Department of Environmental Sciences, stressed on the adoption of adequate measures and techniques for the protection and conservation of Tawi River which is the lifeline of Jammu. Dr. Deepika Slathia, Member Secretary, GCTF-JU said that involving students in such campaigns instils in them a sense of environmental responsibility and provides a practical and interactive way to learn about the causes of water pollution, and the importance of conserving our water bodies. During the interaction, the devotees lauded the efforts of the department and fully cooperated in making the campaign successful.
