University of Jammu Hosts International Lecture Series on Alps-to-Himalaya Geological Evolution

JAMMU, AUGUST 13: In a significant stride towards strengthening global academic collaboration, the Department of Geology, University of Jammu, today hosted a prestigious international lecture series focusing on the geological evolution of the Alps-to-Himalaya region, including the critical Tethys Sequence in India and Nepal.

The proceedings commenced with a formal welcome address by Prof. P.K. Srivastava, who introduced the visiting Polish delegation and provided an overview of the academic milestones of the Department of Geology.

Prof. Meena Sharma, Dean of Sciences and Head, Department of Geology, formally welcomed the international delegation and expressed gratitude for their transcontinental journey to share their expertise and cutting-edge scientific insights with the academic community of the University of Jammu. She emphasized the importance of establishing a robust foundation for joint field investigations, co-authored research publications, and long-term institutional exchange programmes.

The visiting delegation from AGH University of Krakow, Poland, comprised distinguished Earth scientists. Prof. Michał Krobicki led the sessions with advanced reconstructions of ancient depositional environments and an in-depth exploration of Tethyan fossil occurrences across the Alpine-Himalayan system.

Dr. Krzysztof Starzec delivered a comprehensive analysis of Quaternary seismic deposits, mapping structural changes and tectonic shifts across India and Nepal, while Dr. Anna Kwietniak contributed critical expertise to the collaborative scientific discourse.

The lecture series brought together researchers, faculty members and students, providing a platform for meaningful academic exchange between European and South Asian geoscience communities. The sessions examined the complex tectonic, fossil and sedimentological histories extending from the Alps to the Himalayan mountain range. The experts underscored that mapping the Meso-Cenozoic layers of this expansive geological system is vital for understanding ancient continental collisions as well as for assessing modern seismic risk zones.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the academic community. Senior faculty members of the Department of Geology, including Prof. A.S. Jasrotia, Prof. Varun Parmar, Prof. S.N. Kundal and Dr. Yudhbir Singh, along with faculty members from allied departments, research scholars and students, attended the programme.

The lecture series concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, during which participants raised intricate queries related to Himalayan tectonics and stratigraphy. The Polish experts comprehensively addressed the queries, making the interaction an enriching academic experience.
