JU’s Bhaderwah Campus celebrates National Librarian’s Day

Bhaderwah, August 12: The Bhaderwah Campus of the University of Jammu celebrated National Librarian’s Day on the occasion of the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science in India, at the Campus Library. The programme marked the first celebration of National Librarian’s Day at the Campus.

In his message, Prof. Rahul Gupta, Rector, Bhaderwah Campus, congratulated the library staff, faculty members and students on the occasion and underscored the indispensable role of libraries in promoting knowledge, academic excellence and research. He said that a library is not merely a repository of books but a dynamic centre of learning, intellectual engagement and knowledge creation.

Prof. Gupta encouraged students to develop a strong reading culture and make optimum use of the library’s print and digital resources to broaden their knowledge and enhance their academic capabilities. He also appreciated the efforts of the Campus Library in embracing technological advancements and providing students and faculty with modern and accessible library services.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a floral tribute to Dr. S. R. Ranganathan.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chhering Tandup, In-charge, Library, highlighted the important role of libraries in supporting education, learning and research. Sharing his personal experiences, he spoke about the role of the library in shaping his academic and professional journey and emphasized the importance of developing regular reading habits among students. He encouraged students to make effective use of the library and its resources and to make library use a regular part of their academic life.

Dr. Kuljit Singh, Academic Coordinator, in his address, emphasized the integral role of libraries in strengthening the academic environment of an institution.

Vinod Parihar, Semi-Professional Assistant, Library, spoke on the significance of the day and the major contributions of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, with particular emphasis on the Five Laws of Library Science and their continued relevance from traditional libraries to the present era of automation, digital resources and Artificial Intelligence. He also highlighted the evolving role of library professionals in facilitating access to authentic information resources and supporting the academic and research needs of users.

The programme was attended by Dr. Chhering Tandup, In-charge, Library; Dr. Kuljit Singh, Academic Coordinator; Mr. Mujeeb Sheikh, Assistant Registrar; Dr. Shayan Javed; Dr. Ashok Sharma; Mr. Ajay Lakhnotra; Dr. Neeraj Kumar; faculty members, library staff and students.

The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the Rector, Bhaderwah Campus, dignitaries, faculty members, library staff and students for their participation and support. This was followed by a Library Orientation.
