Sanjeev Verma (IAS) Inaugurates Five-Day Faculty Capacity Building Workshop at the University of Jammu

Jammu, Feb 09: A five-day Faculty Capacity Building Workshop, jointly organized by the Department of Buddhist Studies and the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centre (MMTTC), commenced today in the Seminar Hall of the Department of Punjabi at the University of Jammu.

The workshop was officially inaugurated by Shri Sanjeev Verma, IAS, Principal Secretary (CEO) of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the importance of focused research on the Buddhist heritage of Jammu and Kashmir within a contemporary context. He highlighted the region's rich Buddhist legacy, which includes its living monastic traditions, archaeological sites, and intercultural connections. Shri Verma noted that such research is essential for the preservation of heritage, fostering deeper academic engagement, promoting interfaith dialogue, and cultivating cultural harmony. He further observed that this research could contribute to sustainable tourism and informed policymaking for future generations. Additionally, he stressed the significance of research in the Dogri language and culture.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Madan Kumar Jha, Senior Faculty at Central Sanskrit University in Kot-Bhalwal. He discussed the integration of ancient Indian wisdom with the contemporary educational needs of modern pedagogy. Dr. Jha emphasized the importance of holistic development through the Panchakosha theory, experiential learning, and value-based education, drawing insights from classical texts such as the Upanishads. He also highlighted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 actively promotes this integration to encourage critical thinking, inclusivity, and a strong connection to India’s rich knowledge traditions.

Professor S. K. Pandita, Director, MMTTC, highlighted the significance of workshops conducted by the Centre in collaboration with various academic departments. He stated that such initiatives promote meaningful interaction with external experts and provide valuable exposure to current national research trends. He also emphasized the growing responsibility of teachers in developing quality self-learning materials and maintaining academic rigor in distance education.

Earlier, the Head of the Department of Buddhist Studies welcomed the participants and outlined the objectives of the workshop. The programme has witnessed the participation of 35 faculty members from various higher educational institutions, including those from far-flung areas such as Kathua, Billawar, Basantgarh, Basohli, and Udhampur.

The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Vivek Sharma. The entire event was coordinated by Dr. Rajesh Sharma. Both Dr. Vivek Sharma and Dr. Rajesh Sharma are coordinators of the workshop.
