The Department of Botany, University of Jammu in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing (DEERS) celebrated the World Environment Day – 2024, on the International theme of “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience”. The event, held at the Seminar Hall of the department, drew a large audience of school, college and university students, researchers, faculty members, and environment enthusiasts.
The event commenced with the planting of Red Sandalwood tree, symbolizing our commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. An exhibition of beautiful crafts and models made from waste materials was also displayed which was greatly appreciated by the participants as it showcased the unique ideas and innovations to recycle any waste into something of purpose. Lighting of the sacred lamp and reciting the pious Saraswati Vandana inaugurated the event in the religious spirits. The distinguished dignitaries and the esteemed audience were graciously welcomed by the Head of the Department, Prof. Susheel Verma.
Unifying everyone in the positivity and healing ambiance of plants, the esteemed dignitaries, Shri. Vasu Yadav, IFS, PCCF/Chairman pollution Control Committee (J&K), Chief Guest of the event, Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Jammu, who was the Guest of Honour and Prof. Susheel Verma, Head, Department of Botany, were presented with potted plants as a token of gratitude. Dr. Kirti, the enthusiastic Programme Organizer-DEERS-EIACP J&K elaborated the detailed activity overview undertaken by the DEERS from 25th May to the 4th of June, involving 11 different activities organized throughout the Jammu city with active participation of over 150 participants belonging to 8 institutions. Many of the competitions involved were based on generating awareness among the participants, towards utilization of waste products to foster a sense of responsibility for a greener and more sustainable future.
Shri. Vasu Yadav while attending the gathering elaborated upon the efforts of all the stake holders of the society to work towards an outstanding environment. While quoting some very relevant incidents from our history, he emphasized upon the audience to work consistently and relentlessly towards environment friendly approaches in our daily conduct.
The event featured a presentation on the theme of World Environment Day-2024 by Sh. Majid Farooq, the Coordinator-DEERS-EIACP J&K, covering topics of ecosystem degradation and global warming. He also elaborated the Catch the Rain Programme by Jal Shakti Department framed to understand rain analysis, the concept of LiFE which is a India led Global mass movement and many more such progressive initiatives of public interest to halt the detrimental effects of Climate Change. Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean Faculty of Sciences, University of Jammu, also shared his insights on the various conventions on biodiversity and Environment sustainability and how following our own Indian Sidhantas was the way forward in leading the global scenario towards a sustainable future.
A prize distribution ceremony was also held felicitating the winners of various competitions held in the various institutions highlighting the theme of the Environment Day. The event concluded with the formal vote of thanks by Mr. Zubair Ahmed Shah who motivated the students to follow the go-green principles in the spirit of life. Ms. Aroosa Mattoo conducted the proceedings of the programme.
