The Centre for Women’s Studies, in collaboration with Mathematics Department, University of Jammu organized 12th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Mathematics Department on Thursday, 24th November 2022. Prof. Neeru Sharma, Faculty, Department of Home Science, University of Jammu was the resource person. Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, after welcoming all the participants apprised the participants regarding the motive behind the conduct of such workshop. She in her address explained how the concept of gender operates in institutions like caste, class, religion, region etc. She even expressed that the outcome of this workshop should be sensibility, sensitivity, and sensitization. 

 Prof. Neeru Sharma the key resource person for the workshop began the session by stating that she was pleased to see a large number of female students in the department which is usually considered to be the male dominated discipline. In her presentation she used the data to demonstrate the prevalent gender biasness and gender stereotypes in the society. She also mentioned about the day to day stereotypical norms that operate in a very subtle way and have been internalized in such a way that we never tend to question these inequalities. Further she shared her personal experiences to explain the perception regarding the construction of gender. While interacting with the students she also explained about the objectification of women through media like in cinema and advertisements which in turn creates certain social expectations from both the genders.

Prof. Kuldeep Singh Charak, Head, Department of Mathematics, in his address said that gender sensitization is very important for the students and scholars who are the ambassadors of the change in the society. He also appreciated and applauded the efforts of the Centre for conducting such workshop. He further emphasized that family as an institution plays major role in creating gender sensitivity among the children and it is very important that we should respect the differences and each one of us needs to play his/her role in bringing gender equality in the society. He also stressed that the financial independence for women is essential to ensure women’s own individuality and security in the family as well as in the society at large.
