The University of Jammu has been conferred with District Green Champion Award 2021-2022 by Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education (MGNCRE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India for its exemplary work and contribution to Swachhta extension and awareness that has made difference to its campus and neighbourhood. The awards, given to only one institution per district, were announced recently. Prof. Manoj. K. Dhar, Vice-Chancellor, and Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar congratulated the entire University staff and the members of GCTF-JU for this important achievement. It is pertinent to mention here that the ranking parameters included green initiatives taken by the varsity in the fields of water management, use of alternative energy sources (Solar Energy), greenery management, waste management (solid and liquid), and land-use management within the campus. In addition, the environmental consciousness and awareness activities conducted by the University for the members of civil society like the “Save Tawi Campaign” by the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, and extension activities organized in the villages adopted by the University under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan were also highlighted in the ranking parameters. Green Campus Taskforce (GCTF-JU), University of Jammu had compiled the information on various ranking parameters by taking inputs from concerned departments such as Arboriculture and Landscaping Unit, Health and Sanitation wing, Works department, Members of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, University of Jammu and submitted to MGNCRE for evaluation. It is noteworthy to mention here that the University of Jammu has constituted Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU) comprising one teacher-in-charge and two student volunteers from each department with an aim to develop an ecologically sustainable campus and stimulate environmental consciousness and stewardship among the students by encouraging them to take environment-related initiatives in the university. Several extension and awareness activities are organized by GCTF-JU every year. This award is a testimony to the hard work put in by the members of GCTF-JU to make Jammu University clean and green. The University of Jammu has recently taken certain green initiatives like the installation of Solar streetlights on the campus and is in process of installing the grid-connected rooftop solar power plant of 1525kWp capacity under the Jammu Smart City Mission. The university has also initiated the process of conducting Green Auditing of the University for ISO 14001-2015 certification.
