Centre for Women’s Studies organizes 6th Gender Sensitization Workshop for the students of Directorate of Sports and Physical Education

Under the Gender Sensitization Workshop Series, the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized Sixth workshop for the students of Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu on Tuesday, 5th October, 2021.   Prof.Shweta Prasad, Professor, Department of Sociology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi was the resource person.  The workshop began with welcome address of Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, who introduced the Resource person to the participants. She also briefed about the main focus of these workshops which is creating gender sensitive environment on campus and apprised how these workshops are very beneficial for creating gender sensitivity among the students and scholars which is the need of the hour.

Prof. Shweta Prasad, key speaker for the workshop spoke about the construction of gender which takes place in the family through the process of socialization and how family as institution can play important role in inculcating gender neutral thinking. She also stressed on the need of gender sensitization in the Institutions of Higher Learning for creating gender equality. Further she discussed in detail about the Millennium Developmental Goals, Sustainable Developmental Goals and CEDAW etc and role of various conferences held at national and international level for attaining gender equality at all levels and in all spheres. She also narrated few case studies in this context.

Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education,University of Jammu emphasized on the need of Gender sensitization and said that it is  important  to know the specific needs and requirements of the particular gender.  He added that education can play important role in sensitizing the individuals and he appreciated the efforts of the Centre in conducting such type of workshops. 

More than 100 participants comprising of students and faculty of Directorate of Sports and Physical Education and from outside the University attended the workshop. The workshop was very actively attended by the participants who enthusiastically took part in the discussion which was followed by the Lecture. The participants shared their views and observations on issues like equality, Gender roles, Son preference, Third gender etc.  The workshop was conducted by Dr Saranjit Kaur, faculty Centre for Women Studies who also presented the formal vote of thanks. Ms Poonam Sharma, looked after the digital modalities of the workshop
