Plantation Drive organized by Department of Environmental Sciences, JU

Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, and Green Campus Task Force (GCTF-JU) in collaboration with J&K Forest Department and INTACH Jammu Chapter organized a plantation drive in the University Campus to celebrate “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav- A Jan Utsav to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence”. Prof. Manoj K. Dhar, Hon’ble Vice-chancellor, University of Jammu inaugurated the drive by planting a Rudraksh (Elaeocarpus ganitrus) tree in Shiv temple in the Residential complex of the University with an aim to make people aware of the importance of trees and to enhance the ‘Jan-Bhagidari’ in planting trees so that everyone can realize their responsibilities towards planting trees. Over 60 saplings of traditional and medicinal plants provided by the Urban Forestry Division, J&K Forest Department were planted during the drive. The university targets to plant 160 ornamental, fruiting, and avenue trees on the campus in the coming days. Among others who planted trees in the campus included Prof. R. K. Rampal, Dean Life Sciences, Prof. Prakash Antahal, Dean Students Welfare, Prof. Piyush Malaviya, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Deepika Slathia, Member Secretary, GCTF-JU, Mr. Sunil Singh Manhas, DFO, Mr. Shakeel Ahmad, Range Officer, Sh. S.M. Sahni, INTACH Jammu Chapter, Dr. Sudhir Singh, Joint Secretary, Secrecy/Adm, JD, Mr. Rajesh, INTACH Jammu Chapter, Prof. A.K. Raina, Dr. Meenakshi Khajuria, Prof. Seema Langer, Prof. Shashi Manhas, Prof. PK Lehana and Dr. Ramni Gupta. Faculty members from other departments of the University, staff from the forest department, former senior functionaries of the J&K Government, and the members of the civil society participated in the event.
