Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu Organizes Gender Sensitisation Workshop at Govt. High School, Patta Bohri, Jammu

Jammu, 4th November, 2025: The Centre for Women's Studies, University of Jammu, successfully conducted a Gender Sensitisation Workshopfor the students of Govt. High School, Patta Bohri, Jammu on4th November, 2025.

The keynote speaker for the event was Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu. She spoke on the theme “Importance of Gender Sensitisation and Gender Equality”.In her lecture, shegave details on the difference between sexand gender and how gender isconstructed andpracticed in thesociety.  She also emphasized that education isone of themost important foundations for the growth anddevelopmentofyoung students. Sheasserted that the roles we perform as maleandfemale in thesociety are thelife skills and it is through these knowledge and skills our values, attitudes and overall direction of life is learned. She also stressed on building confidence and creativity which will help the students to learn about right andwrong, respect for others irrespective of gender. She also said that students should not only learn and get knowledge for exam rather also learn to handle emotions, peer pressure and various life challenges. Further, she explained how gender is conditioned in minute details of upbringing in different institutions of society like family, education system and religion, etc.

Additionally, Prof. Nayyar, gave details regarding the various constitutional provisions and legal safeguards like POSH Act, Child Marriage Restraint Act, Dowry Prohibition Act, Domestic Violence Act, POCSO Act etc. to create awareness among young students.She asserted that awareness is the key and these types of workshops help in creating gender sensitization which helps in empowerment of women.

Smt. Raji Malpotra, Headmaster, Govt. High School, Patta Bohri, in her welcome addressapplauded the efforts of the Centre for taking this initiative. She also spoke on the need of gender sensitivityamong students which is required to be inculcated in the early years of life. Further, she stressed that students are the future leaders of the society and they must understand gender biases to create a more equitable environment.In her address she congratulated the Centre for such efforts and requested to have future collaborations with school on other relevant issues related to gender concerns.

Large numbers of teachers, office staff,and students participated in the workshop very enthusiastically and shared their personal experiences. Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty member from Centre for Women’s Studies conducted the proceedings of the event. Mr. Atul Sharma, faculty from Govt. High School along with Dr. Disha Sharma, faculty from Centre for Women’s Studies coordinated the workshop.The workshop concluded with the formal vote of thanks by Dr. Disha Sharma.
