Department of Psychology, University of Jammu joins the global community in commemorating International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The Department of Psychology, University of Jammu joins the global community in commemorating International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 6th, December 2023.This day is celebratedevery year on 3rd December. The students of the Department of Psychology took the initiative to promote awareness and mobilize support for the rights, dignity, and well-being of people with disabilities.This year's theme, "United in action to rescue and achieve the sustainable development goals for, with, and by persons with disabilities," underscores our commitment to empower and initiate actions to advocate for inclusivity. The Psychology Club of the Department of Psychology recognizes the importance of fostering a world that values diversity and ensures equal opportunities for everyone.

The event began with a warm welcome, addressed by Ms. Sanampreet Kaur and Mr. N. Sourav Singh. The students showed great enthusiasm to increaseawareness and introduced the mind shift for the person with a disability among the participants. The PowerPoint presentations by Ms. AnenyaVerma and Ms. Avantika, on numerous evoked psychological insight. They discussed various psychological disabilities accompanied by major physical, intellectual as well as learning disabilities.

Following the presentations,a video demonstration was conducted to broaden the horizons. In the end,the discussion was carried out. The students, scholars, and the faculty of the department discussed how the awareness could be further generated and people could be sensitized. The discussion closed with students feeling motivated to carry out the work in the field actively. Many new ideas were brought forward.

Later, in her address to the participants, the Head of the Department of Psychology, Prof. Satnam Kour, acquainted the gathering with future-directed aspiring thoughts. She highlighted the importance of emotional disability as an important trajectory under the umbrella of disabilities. Further, she emphasized the significance of being ‘empathetic’ and not sympathetic to a ‘specially-abled person’. She exhorted on the role of psychology in promoting wellness in specially-abled people. She said “Tum Besaharaho to Kisi ka Sahara Bano” resonating by putting oneself in others' shoes. Prof.Satnam appreciated the efforts of the students.A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. N. Sourav Singh.

As we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let us collectively work towards creating a society that embraces and empowers individuals of all abilities. Together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible world.

All the students and scholars of the department attended the event among the faculty members Dr.SaritaSood, Dr.Karuna Gupta, Dr.Dharvinder Singh, Dr. Lovely Sabarwal, and Dr.Mridula Bali were also present.
