Students of Poonch Campus visits Satellite Silkworm Breeding Station

As part of the ongoing Education tour of the students of Department of Sericulture, Poonch Campus, today visited Satellite Silkworm Breeding Station, Conoor, CSGRC, Hosur, Tamil Nadu and NIO University of Goa. The students are accompanied by the faculty of the Department of Sericulture Dr Muzafar Ahmad Bhat and Miss Sumya Kapoor.  Mrs. Gonavati, Senior Technical Assistant described silkworm rearing and demonstrated about Breeding of silkworms. She also showed different breeds of productive silkworms as well as different mutants of silkworms and also described the plantation of mulberry. Apart from this she also took the students to the Museum where she showed different silkworm breeds and different by-products of Sericulture and their uses.  Mr. Sabrish, Assistant Inspector of Sericulture engaged the students and explained about silkworm rearing, reeling and weaving. He also demonstrated about grainage, post cocoon technology and allowed the students to see the different instruments which they are using in different Sericulture activities. At CSGRC, Hosur, Tamil Nadu, Dr. G. Ravi Kumar, Head/Scientist-D welcomed the staff and students and gave an elaborated introduction about CSGRC followed by Dr. Triveni Scientist-C Mulberry Division a detailed lecture on Mulberry Germplasm.  She allowed the students to visit her lab and demonstrated the activities going inside her lab. She took the students to the mulberry garden and showed them the different varieties of mulberry which they are maintaining in their germplasm. Dr. Lokesh, Scientist-D gave a detailed lecture on seri-biotechnology and also demonstrated the experiments done in his lab. He also took the students to the Museum and showed all the activities of Sericulture. At NIO University of Goa,  Mr. Dev Anand Technical Officer, gave students a detailed lecture on the research and development going in their Institute. He added that since Goa is a coastal area so we are focusing only on sea research. The students showed a movie about their activities and research. 

 Prof. Nitin Sawant, Programme Director, School of Biological Sciences welcomed the staff and students and gave a detailed lecture on his research. He said that seven MRP are in running and eight research scholars are working under his guidance. Students were allowed to visit his lab where he demonstrated his research and development to Biological sciences.  Staff and Students of Department of Sericulture, Poonch Campus thanked Prof. Dipankar Sengupta for giving them such a great and wonderful opportunity.They also express their gratitude to all the Scientists of Satellite Silkworm Breeding Station, Conoor, CSGRC, Hosur and NIO and Prof. Nitin Sawant and his coworkers for spending their valuable time.
