Every year National Sports Day is observed on 29th August to commemorate the birthday of Indian hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Born on 29 August 1905 in present-day Prayagraj, UP, Major Dhyan Chand was the captain of the Gold medal-winning Indian hockey team at the Berlin Olympics in 1936. The Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu celebrated National Sports Day 2022 at the University Campus. Prof. Umesh Rai, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, was the Chief Guest whereas Prof. Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Registrar University of Jammu, Prof. Rajeev Rattan Sharma Director CDC, Prof. Prakash C. Anthal, Dean Student’s Welfare, Dr. Dharminder Magotra Joint Registrar, Sh. RanjeetKalra, Member J&K Sports Council, Sh. Rashid Ahmed Choudhary, DySP International Fencer,Sh. Manmeet Singh, Gatka Association, Sh. Abhishek Jain, Secy. J&K Kick Boxing Association, Sh. H.S.Chib, Retd. Physical Director, Sh. Ramesh Magotra, Retd. T.T.Coach and Sh. Rajan Sharma, Secy. J&K Boxing Association, Dr. Roopali Slathia Physical Director were the Guests of Honour on the occasion. Prof. Umesh Rai, in his address, enlightened the gathering with the message that “We celebrate National Sports Day to embrace sportsmanship and brotherhood that comes with sports. National sports day is celebrated graciously all over the world to honor national sports teams for their outstanding performance for the respective countries. It is pertinent to embrace sports traditions as it encourages sportsmanship among people and keeps the hardships that they bring to the country in the form of achievements. Sports day is all about motivating and encouraging sportsmen with their efforts that they put forward and commendable teamwork.” Speaking on the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated the entire staff of the Directorate and also said that the university will organize various Sports Events of National level in the future for the promotion of Sports in J&K. He also ensured the Directorate for infrastructure development including synthetic Kho-Kho ground, Synthetic Basketball Court, Shooting Range and Multipurpose Hall for all indoor games. He strongly laid emphasis on the University Sports Policy will be implemented soon in order to attract the real talent of JKUT. He further appreciated the efforts of the Directorate for conducting such events throughout the year. Earlier, Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, JU presented formal welcome address and share that National Sports Day does not represent only a day to embrace Sports, to know its importance. No one can be made aware of the significance of its value in one day. National Sports Day marks the journeys of all those tenacious over-the-top athletes and players that did not leave any effort in making India proud. Making the public aware of its sports history to attain a fitter nation is the primary objective of celebrating this day.
He welcomes the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour, prominent personalities in Sports, coaches and managers of the medalist teams, players and all other invited guests on the occasion. “Sports Unleashed Volume-II” – a Sports magazine published under the aegis of Directorate of Sports and Physical Education was also released by Prof. Umesh Rai and other dignitaries on the dice. The magazine highlights the Mega Sports Events organized by the Directorate, and achievements of the Directorate at the University, National and International levels from 2020 to 2022.
Impressive demonstrations of Yoga,Gatka, Fencing, and Kick-Boxing were performed during the function. At last, the award ceremony was held in which the prominent personalities of J&K in Sports, players along with Coaches & Managers who won medals for the University in All India Inter University / National/ International competitions for the session 2021-22 were felicitated with Letter of Appreciation and souvenir T-Shirt. In addition to the above felicitation, the employees of the University of Jammu who had won medals in Jammu University Employees (M&W) tournaments were also awarded mementos and souvenir T-Shirt.

Tarvinder pal Singh, Ms. Bhavna Sharma, Mr. Sanjeev Sharma Mr. Gourav Arora, and officials of the participating teams.The proceedings of the function were conducted by Dr. Komal Nagar, I/c Assistant Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, JU and Sh. Vimal Kishore, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education. The formal Vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Mandeep Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Education, University of Jammu.
