The Centre for Women’s Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Botany, University of Jammu organized 4^th workshop under the ongoing series for the students of the Botany on Wednesday, 24^th, August 2022. Prof.Vishav Raksha, Director Centre for Women’s Studies and Dr. Sonia Aneja, Faculty, Department of Law, University of Jammu were the resource persons. The workshop began with a welcome address by Prof. Vishav Raksha, who after welcoming all the participants explained the motive behind the conduct of such workshops. She took the first session on Gender and gave details about the concept of Sex vs. Gender by conducting an activity through which she explained how gender is constructed through social expectations and societal norms. By quoting various examples of day-to-day life she tried to sensitize the participants as to how masculinity and femininity are built and perceived in society.

Dr. Sonia Aneja, the second key resource person for the workshop, spoke about the concept of Gender and Law. In her address she mentioned how the condition of the women since time immemorial has been secondary. Women are treated unequally in the society which also led to other gender biasness in the society as well. Dr. Aneja also spoke about the constitutional provisions under various Articles like 14,15,16,19 etc and highlighted the existing legal provisions available to safeguard the rights of the women. She also shared few land mark case judgment related to Sexual harassment, Acid attack, Land inheritance, and Rape. She further stressed upon the importance of Gender sensitization through education, the stringent implementation of laws and rational makeover of mindset.

Prof. Veenu Kaul, Head, Department of Botany in her address, emphasized on the importance of such workshops in terms of understanding the concept of gender and gender-related concerns. She also congratulated and appreciated the efforts of the Centre to conduct such workshops for their students and scholars as well.

More than sixty-five participants comprising Jstudents, research scholars and Faculty members of the department of Botany, attended the workshop. The participants very keenly participated in the workshop and raised many queries on the issues like Women's Reservation, Maternity benefits for the girl students and scholars, Women's inclusiveness and Gender Identity etc. which were answered by the resource persons to their satisfaction.

The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies. The office staff of the Botany Department looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
