University of Jammu, in collaboration with JKSTIC, DST, organizes an Eye-Opening Cybercrime Awareness Program

Jammu, [18th Dec. 2025]: A one-day awareness program on “Cybercrime Unmasked: Protecting Yourself in the Digital Age” was successfully organized by Science Clubs, Utsaah, in collaboration with Jammu and Kashmir Science and Technology & Innovation Council, DST, on 18th Dec. 2025 at the University of Jammu.

 

The event equipped over 100 students, scholars, faculty, staff, employees, and community members with essential knowledge to navigate online threats safely. The program featured expert-led sessions on identifying cybercrimes like phishing, identity theft, ransomware, and online fraud. Renowned speakers, including cybersecurity specialists from JKST&IC and digital forensics experts, shared real-world case studies, interactive demonstrations, and practical tips for digital hygiene. Participants engaged in an interactive discussion during a panel on secure password practices, two-factor authentication, and reporting mechanisms via platforms such as the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

 

The Chief Guest of the event, Prof. J. P. Joorel, Dean of Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, highly appreciated such an initiative and encouraged the participants. He shared many real-life examples from elite society who were victims of cyberfraud.

 

Guest of Honour, Professor and Head, Dr Romesh Kumar, wholeheartedly supported the event. He shared his views and said, “Collaborations like this amplify the reach of science and technology for the public good. We urge everyone to stay vigilant and adopt best practices to unmask cybercrime.”

 

 

 

Special guest, Smt. Shruti Khanna, Assistant Director, JKSTIC, and DST coordinator from JKSTIC, appreciated the Science Club, Utsaah, and plans to extend such initiatives to schools and colleges. Invited speaker, Prof. Subhanandan Singh Jamwal, Associate Professor, Computer Science and IT, delivered an interactive lecture on “Cybersecurity and Digital Hygiene.” Our guest speaker, representing civil society, Ms. Kiran Thakur, Advocate and Legal Consultant and Counsellor, delivered an awareness lecture on the topic “Cyber Crime and Cyber Safety”. Speakers spoke from their long-standing experience with many real-life serious offences. Also informed on how to safeguard ourselves in this digital era. Invited panelist, Dr Nitan Sharma, Assistant Professor, The Law School, University of Jammu shared his views and experience in the light of legal laws. Guest panelist Mr Subham Kotwal gave very relevant examples and inspired the youth to be more responsible cyber-users.

 

Earlier, Prof. Meena Sharma, Chairperson, Utsaah & Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Jammu delivered the welcome address, in which she warmly welcomed the guests and participants and encouraged them to take full advantage of the highly relevant topic by engaging in discussions on issues related to cybersafety and cybercrime encountered in day-to-day life.

 

The Coordinator, Science Club, Utsaah, Dr Chinmoyee gave a warm vote of thanks and

stated, “In an era where cyber threats evolve daily, empowering our youth with proactive defense strategies is crucial. This program underscores our commitment to fostering a safer digital ecosystem through education and innovation.”

 

The event concluded with a pledge-taking ceremony affirming commitment to cyber safety. Certificates and resource kits containing guides and helpline numbers were distributed to participants. Science Clubs Utsaah and JKST&IC plan to extend such initiatives to employees and staff, with a focus on schools and colleges across the region.

 

 

Among others present were Prof. Sadaf Shah, Dr. Tirth Ram Shehria, Dr. Shallu, Dr. Younis, Mrs. Ifra Kak and Mr. Tarsem, along with officers, staff, scholars and students from various departments. The programme was well received, with participants engaging enthusiastically in the interactive sessions.
