On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Centre for Women’s Studies, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy, University of Jammu organized s Special Lecture today on 7th March, 2024 on the theme: “Accelerate Action”. 

Prof. Jasbir Singh, Head, Department of Philosophy welcomed all the participants and elaborated on the importance of Women’s Day wherein he gave the historical background of Women’s movements and struggles and how it recognizes women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality. Further, he said that discussing women’s issues is crucial for fostering social progress and economic development.

66875Prof. Anupama Vohra, Department of English, Centre for Distance and Online Education, University of Jammu was the resource person. In her presentation, she explained that this important day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of the women, to reflect on the existing disparities that are still there in society, and to discuss what still needs to be done to fulfil the dream of an egalitarian society. With the help of statistics, she gave detailed data regarding the existing disparities in terms of women’s education, health, employment, violence and poverty. Further, she also mentioned about the specific schemes available for the upliftment of the women and girls.

Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies was the chief guest of the occasion. In her address, she highlighted the significance of celebrating Women's Day and explained how societal conditioning often leads women to make compromises throughout their lives. She said that disparities in various forms are the outcome of different societal expectations from both the genders. She also explained various legal safeguards available for the women.

Large number of students, scholars and faculty members from the Centre and Department of Philosophy very enthusiastically participated in the session. Other among who were present were Prof. Anju Thapa, Department of Hindi, Centre for Distance and Online Education, University of Jammu Dr. Ruby Bharti, Dr. Sushain Raina, Ms. Shalini Gupta all faculty from the Department of Philosophy, Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and Ms. Kunzang Angmo both from Centre for Women’s Studies. Ms. Seerat conducted the program and Ms. Shalini Gupta, faculty, Department of Philosophy, presented the formal vote of thanks.
