About University
Cradled in the lap of mountains at the foothills of auspicious Trikuta, besides the river Tawi at an altitude of 1030 ft. is Jammu. This 'city of temples' has many places...
The Surabhi Nursery School and Day Care Centre, under the Department of Home Science, University of Jammu, celebrated Grandparents Day with great enthusiasm and joy. Organized by the students of the 4th Semester of Home Science (Human Development), the event honored the grandparents of the children attending the Nursery School and Day Care Centre for their significant role in their grandchildren's development.
Grandparents provide a secure foundation for children, especially in families where both parents work. Their stories, filled with life lessons and moral values, nurture the children's creativity and imagination, while their unconditional love offers a sense of safety and security. Furthermore, the bond between grandparents and grandchildren is mutually beneficial. A study by Oxford University has shown that active involvement of grandparents in their grandchildren's lives leads to increased well-being and fewer emotional and behavioral issues in children, while also contributing to happier and longer lives for the grandparents.
Acknowledging the critical role of grandparents, particularly in an era where social media diminishes quality relationship-building time, the students of the 4th Semester, as part of their course on Adulthood and Aging, decided to organize this meaningful event. The program emphasized health and well-being, experience sharing, and the celebration of grandparents.
During the event, grandparents showcased their talents with performances of devotional songs and folk dances. Participants also enjoyed a variety of games, including Jenga, Passing the Parcel, and Ludo, which added to the day's enjoyment. Grandparents appreciated the efforts of the Department and expressed a desire for more such programs, feeling more involved in their grandchildren's early development.
Mr. Suraj from the Department of Environmental Sciences, JU, added to the festivities with his renditions of Dogri and Kashmiri songs, adding a cultural touch to the celebration.
The occasion was graced by faculty members from the Department of Home Science: Prof. Samridhi Arora (Head of the Department), Prof. Neeru Sharma (Course Coordinator), Prof. Sarika Manhas, Dr. Charu Mohan, Dr. Priyanka Sharma, and Ms. Anu Choudhary. The teachers from Surabhi Nursery School, including Ms. Mamta Singh, Ms. Pooja Saraf, and Ms. Seema Sharma, along with support staff Ms. Neelam Devi, Ms. Anu Devi, and Ms. Suman, played a pivotal role in the event's success. Additionally, the non-teaching staff members of the Department contributed significantly to the program's smooth execution.
The students of the 4th Semester extended their heartfelt thanks to all attendees for their participation and support, which made the event a memorable celebration of the invaluable contributions of grandparents to family and society.
