Kathua Campus, University of Jammu organized three-day skill development workshop on the world famous Basohli painting popularized for its miniature art style from May 17-19, 2024. The three-day workshop on Basholi miniature painting not only provided a platform for artistic expression but also served as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. The workshop commenced with an impressive turnout of students from the Institute of Music and Fine Arts and Kathua Campus. The participants were interested in learning miniature painting which is well-known for its evocative colors, vivid and deep-set patterns.
The event commenced with the presence of Soham Singh Billawaria, a celebrated Basohli miniature artist serving as the event's resource person. With his expertise, participants explored the intricate techniques and storied history of Basohli miniature art. Through interactive sessions and hands-on demonstrations, students gained insights into Basohli painting, delving into its rich history and techniques. Additionally, IMFA faculty provided guidance on fundamental art skills and techniques.
The second day of the workshop was marked by a vibrant cultural evening, featuring performances that celebrated the local culture and traditions of the region. Mr. Suraj Singh, a celebrated vocal singer and a proud representative of the soil, graced the occasion by his captivating performance. His soulful renditions enthralled the audience, further enhancing the cultural exchange experience.
The culminating day of the workshop witnessed the presence of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu as the Chief Guest, accompanied by other esteemed guests, Prof. Meena Sharma, Dean Planning and Development (JU) and Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies (JU). The esteemed guests visited the painting workshop area and took a round of the entire campus followed by valedictory function.
Prof. Umesh Rai, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu lauded the organizers for their initiative in promoting skill development and preserving cultural heritage. He congratulated all participants for their dedication and commitment to mastering the art of Basholi miniature painting, emphasizing its importance in preserving our cultural legacy. He also stressed upon the importance of skill development as it contributes to self-confidence, holistic growth and development, and entrepreneurship. Prof. Rai expressed that such skill based training helps learners to find, develop, and maintain their inherent talent particularly in the field of painting. Further Prof. Rai emphasized on the significance of conducting such skill based workshops as it offers participants with insight into self-exploration and advancement.
Prof. Meena Sharma, Dean Planning and Development (JU) congratulated the organizers, all the participants, and guests for their invaluable contributions in making the event a resounding success. She further emphasized the importance of such initiatives in nurturing talent and promoting cultural exchange. She said that Basholi miniature painting not only provided a platform for artistic expression but also served as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the region. She highlighted the significance of fine arts education and cultural exchange in today's society.
Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies (JU) emphasized the importance of art in education and the preservation of cultural heritage. Further, she stressed that students should pursue their artistic endeavors. She also underscored the significance of organizing such initiatives in nurturing talent and promoting cultural exchange. She encouraged everyone to continue their artistic pursuits with passion and dedication. She also said that the participants should carry forward the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop. Prof. Rohmetra also highlighted the journey of shifting Kathua Campus to its own building from the rented accommodation and also gifted different commemorative stamps to the campus.
Prof. Arvind Jasrotia, Rector, Kathua Campus presented the welcome address and expressed gratitude towards all the participants, guests, and organizers for their invaluable contributions in the event a resounding success. He further added that the three-day skill development workshop on Basholi miniature painting aimed at fostering artistic talent and promoting cultural heritage. Prof. Jasrotia also said that the Kathua campus looks forward to hosting more such initiatives in the future, continuing its mission of fostering creativity and innovation.
Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Special Secretary to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, and Irfan Goni, Campus Development Officer, University of Jammu were also graced the occasion with their special presence. Mr. Rakesh Sharma, HOD Fine Arts, Dr. Amarjeet Singh, and Mr. Amandeep Singh, IMFA were presented with the certificate of appreciation for their contribution during the workshop. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Rockey Gupta, I/c Principal UIET and programme was coordinated by Dr. Nisha Choudhary.
