The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu has organized a lecture on ‘Gender Sensitization among Students to Deal With Peer Group: An Analysis’ in the seminar hall of the department. Prof. Virender Koundal, Director DSRS, welcomed the Resource Person and 5696the Chief Guest Prof. Jasbir Singh, Head Department of Philosophy and former Dean Social Sciences, University of Jammu. After a elaborative introduction on the theme of the lecture, Prof. Koundal invited Prof Jasbir Singh to deliver lecture to the August gathering. 

In his discussion, Prof. Jasbir has deliberated from the definition of gender and sex in our society. He methodically and with live examples of different regions of the world provided lucid analysis of gender sensitization that include different aspects of gender studies, for instance, gender equality, gender equity, social construct, and socialization of varied patterns of social behaviour.529 By elaborating on these themes, Prof. Jasbir Singh explained the behaviour of women and man in society and how it has been groomed from childhood in a patterned way or role defining concerns of the society that takes shape in the form of social construct and gradually takes shape as moral roles and values.54654 He discussed how women’s role has been changed with the passage of time, particularly with technology and modernity drive, and in the name of gender equality. But these domains instead of giving her freedom, they are overburdening her social, familial and professional responsibilities. Apart from this, Prof. Jasbir also underlined how the society expects a set of values from affectionate, tolerant, obedient, hospitable, doing service to men and remain more careful to her traditional family duties. Adding to this, he stressed how social construction of gender takes shape wherein violence against women and exploitation of women is prominent and taken for granted.   

The lecture was followed by the question-answer session. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Mohd. Monir Alam and this special lecture was attended by the department faculty Dr. Surinder Mohan, Dr. Suneel Kumar, Dr. Ganesh Malhotra, and Dr. Ranjan Sharma, Research Scholars and Postgraduate students of the Defence and Strategic Studies.
