National Science Day was celebrated by the students, scholars and faculty members of the Department of Physics of University of Jammu on 28th February, 2023. National Science Day (NSD) is celebrated in India on February 28th each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928 for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The Head of the Department, Prof. Arun Bharti inaugurated the event and apprised the students about the importance of observing NSD to inculcate scientific temperament in the society. First year students doing their post graduation in Physics presented an impressive presentation giving details about the life education, and the Raman effect. Mr. Kanhaiya Sharma, Mr. Kunal Sharma, Ms. Shivani Rasgotra, Mr Pushpam Sharma and Mr. Avinash Tikoo who gave the presentation explained the Raman effect, Raman spectroscopy its types and spin-offs of the Raman effect. A poem “Science the Poetry of the Universe” was recited by Ms. Shivani Rasgotra and a talk on the importance of contribution made by Raman in the field of Science was delivered by Ms. Kavita Sharma. This was followed by talks by the research scholars Mr. Shafiq and Mr. Randhir Singh who gave insight into their field of specialization as an important and thurst area of research.
Others who attended the event included Prof. Anju Basin, Prof. K.K. Bamzai, Er. Anik Gupta, Dr. Sandeep Araya and non teaching staff of the department. The vote of thanks was presented by the event convener Prof. Ramni Gupta.She expressed her gratitude to the head of the department and the students for support in organizing the event in a very short time.

The event concluded with poster session prepared on the theme like “Contribution to Science in India”, “Scattering as a Phenomenon to know!” and “Knowing my area of Research” prepared by Sonali, Shubham, Avinash, Madhurya, Nidhi, Stuti and Sheetal. Event was conducted by Ms. Shalini Rasgotra and Ms. Muskan Sharma.
