The Centre for Women’s Studies, in collaboration with Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu organized 15th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education on Thursday, 15th December 2022. Prof Jasbir Singh, Senior Faculty from Department of Economics and Dean Faculty Social Sciences, University of Jammu was the resource person. Dr. Daud Iqbal Baba, Director, Directorate of Sport and Physical Education welcomed all the participants. In his address he said that gender sensitization is very important for the students who are the ambassadors of the change in the society. He also appreciated and applauded the efforts of the Centre for conducting such workshop. He shared his experience to explain how gender biasness exists in our society and put forward some thought provoking questions for all. Later Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, gave the introductory remarks and spoke about the relevance of Gender sensitization workshop. She mentioned that Gender issues are not only  women’s issues rather it’s an effort to understand the gender disparities prevalent in the society and by conducting such workshops the Centre is trying to create awareness so that we can build an egalitarian society where everyone gets equal opportunities.

Prof Jasbir Singh, the key resource person for the workshop, began the session by explaining that Gender issues are not just women’s issue rather it is a crucial issue to be discussed for both the genders. He further said that though it seems, all these issues are basic issues and are not considered relevant, but by ignoring such issues we are not only discriminating women but also compromising with the development of our nation.  He also talked about the objectification of women which is being questioned but is still prevalent in our society which needs to be addressed. While interacting with the participants he elaborated on the women’s work participation where despite working for long hour women’s work is still not acknowledged and seen as unproductive. Prof. Singh advised that every individual irrespective of gender should change their biased perspectives and be sensitive and sensitized.

More than 75 participants consisting of Faculty members, Research Scholars and Students of the Directorate very keenly participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Mandeep Singh, Faculty, Directorate of Sports and physical Education and Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies. Mr. Vimal Kishore from Directorate of Sports and Physical Education coordinated and looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
