National Service Scheme (NSS ), Campus Units, University of Jammu, and the Office of the Programme Coordinator NSS, University of Jammu, Jammu, Jammu jointly organized Webinar on event of " World Environment Day -2022' on Google Meet platform on Sunday, 5th June 2022.The theme of the webinar was “Only One Earth “and the topic of the Webinar was " Ecosystem – The Life Support System, Rejuvenation and Restoration”.Prof. Neeru Sharma, Convener, NSS Campus Units, University of Jammu, Jammu, welcomed the Guests and Participants. In her Welcome Address she stated that everyone must promote environment-friendly activities in their daily life to lead a Green Lifestyle.
Dr. Meghna Dhar, NSS Programme Officer, University of Jammu introduced the eminent speaker of the webinar Sh. Om Prakash Sharma Vidyarthi, IFS, Environmentalist and Retd. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Presently Member J&K Biodiversity Council & Member JK Wildlife Board , Jammu & Kashmir. His specialization domain is traditional knowledge of ethnic communities ,field taxonomy of plants & animals especially birds, coining of dogri language scientific expressions for forestry ,ecology & environmental terminology ,creative writing prose, poetry ,short stories ,medicinal plant conservation ,Biodiversity documentation ,bird watching ,butter flying and documentation of wild edible plants. He has so far hosted more than over 1100 Tree Talk interactions, mostly outdoor,some online during Covid crisis.He won Sahitya Akademi award for the Dogri Book , 'Trip Trip Chete' त्रिप त्रिप चेते ,translated into Hindi as ,'बूंद बूंद स्मृतियां'. Sh. Vidyarthi, spoke about various days celebrated throughout the year related to environment and ecology. He stated that due to the depletion of natural resources and the imbalance in the ecosystem, we are facing several problems like global warming and for this purpose each citizen plays important role to save environment. The presentation was exhaustive based on himalayan ecosystem , science and knowledge. He focused on Himalayan concerns, that is Climate change ,UNFCCC 1992 ,NAPCC ,8 missions -solar, energy, water, NMSHE, Climate, Sustainable habitat, sustainable agriculture, Strategic knowledge ;.Biodiversity conservation CBD 1992,3 tier , Biodiversity Act 2002,PBRs ;.Glacial retreat due to global warming ,GLOFs, water scarcity, impacts on agriculture, insect pest, Invasive weeds. ;.Soil erosion ,landslides, forest fires, deforestation, Low regeneration impacting resilience ;.Conservation ,protection of indigenous knowledge ,landraces, crop wild relatives, medicinal plant innovations;. Wetland conservation, solid was mountain ecology, aquatic ecosystem, desert ecosystem, bird diversity, reptile diversity, floral diversity, tree diversity, butterfly diversity and fish diversity. He further spoke that volunteers can play a great role in shapping traditional knowledge into practical innovative knowledge and should take lead in creating awareness among the people from all walks of life to protect the environment in an effective manner for present as well as future generations to come.
The event was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Neeru Sharma, Convenor NSS, Campus Units, and Dr. Anju Sharma Thappa, NSS Programme Coordinator, University of Jammu, Jammu .They lauded the efforts of all the participants for the successful conduct of webinar. The Questions & Answers at the end were taken up.
