Department of Law, University of Jammu celebrated ‘World Environment Day’ by organising a lecture on The Dynamics of Climate Change under the theme ‘Only One Earth. Prof Arvind Jasrotia, Dean, Faculty of Law and Registrar University of Jammu was the Resource Person on the occasion. Prof Arvind Jasorita said that humanity has entered a new epoch in the history of the planet with the transgression of critical tipping points in the Earth system. Scientists name this era as Anthropocene. Sadly, Environmental Law, both International and National Law, through its incremental and path dependant approach has failed to collectively address the exigencies of the Anthropocene System. Climate change is the defining human development challenge for the 21st century that represents the greatest existential threat for humankind and non-human nature. The six assessment reports of the IPCC released so far have confirmed our worst fears -- that human activities are the dominant cause of observed global warming. The negotiating process for the climate change regime has proved to be one of the most contentious in the history of multilateral environmental agreements due to shifting boundaries between developed and certain cohorts of developing countries and the rapidly changing geopolitical reality that affects and is simultaneously shaped by climate change. Prof. Jasrotia discussed varied dilemmas of justice and the postures advocated by different states in a wider equity debate between the developed and developing countries in its climate journey from Rio to Glasgow. He said that the affirmation of the intrinsic worth of nature and ecosystems carries the correlate of recognizing our own limits in claiming the fruits of the earth and devoting ourselves in developing a higher ecological consciousness making us realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more.

Earlier, Prof Satinder Kumar,Head of the Department of Law welcomed the resource person, faculty members, research scholars and students and stressed upon the need to preserve and protect the environment. Sunny Singh, student of Law conducted the proceedings and Dr Savita Nayar presented the vote of thanks.
