The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu in collaboration with Government College for Women Parade, Jammu organized a workshop today on 6th March, 2024 on the Women Empowerment: Social, Psychological and Legal perspective. The workshop focused on empowering women and addressing gender equality. Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies was the resource person
She began her presentation by discussing the various gender roles and the social expectations that shape an individual. Prof. Nayyar stressed on the how psychology plays a significant role in shaping gender relationship and assigns roles to different genders. Further, she explained how psychological biases leads to gender stereotypes and affects in various ways reinforcing gender inequality. She also said that how gender-related issues are the outcome of deep-rooted patriarchal mindset which needs to be transformed. Further she gave insights on the conceptual understanding of empowerment, its importance and how it can be achieved. Wherein she asked the students to be vocal and stressed upon taking stand for themselves. Additionally, she elaborated on the legal provisions available to combat these social issues and emphasized the collective responsibility of society to ensure effective implementation of these laws, ultimately striving for gender equality.
Dr. Probhjot Kour, from department of Psychology, GCW, Parade college also deliberated on the various issues that girls are facing in the society. She explained how Psychology as a subject helps to understand gender relationships that has been traditionally unequal and how the greater equality can be brought through awareness and change in mindset.
Nearly 150 participants very enthusiastically participated in the workshop and asked various questions which were answered to their satisfaction. Other among who were present were Dr. Manju and Dr. Nisha both, Faculty from Psychology Department and Dr. Saranjit Kaur and Ms. Kunzang Angmo, both faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies. Lavish Mahajan conducted the program, Pranvi welcomed the participants and Nitya presented the formal vote of thanks.
