JU organises a lecture on Anti-ragging

In observance of ‘Anti Ragging Day’, the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organised a lecture on ‘Anti-Ragging’ by Dr. Monica Narang, Associate Professor, The Law School, University of Jammu at the Seminar Hall of DSW. The purpose of organizing the lecture was to sensitize the students about different regulations related to ragging. It was attended by a sizeable gathering of students, members of anti ragging squad and members of Campus Cultural Committee.

 The topic of the lecture was, ‘Breaking the menace of Ragging: Provisions and Regulations in the National Perspective’. Dr. Monica informed that Ragging is originally a western concept and was in the form of social interaction between seniors and juniors in schools and colleges. However, often, these interactions, take a brutal, inhuman and anti-social, form. Even some of the highly reputed colleges and institutions have a terrible history of ragging. 43845Ragging has social, physical, political, economic, academic and psychological dimensions. She also informed that in the present scenario there are various laws, regulations and policies for preventing, prohibiting & punishing the cases of ragging & violations which are monitored by University Grants Commission as well as Indian Penal Code & Various Acts & enactments. Institutions must adhere to UGC guidelines, follow court rulings, and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a safe and respectful academic environment.

 Earlier, in her welcome address, Prof. Monika Chadha set the tone of the session and asserted that there is zero tolerance towards the menace of ragging in the University of Jammu. As prevention is always a better option, that is where this lecture will play a vital role in making students aware about what constitutes ragging. Prof. Sarika Manhas presented the vote of thanks.
