The Department of Psychology, University of Jammu in collaboration with Tiger Gunners staged a Nukkad Natak- a street play on the occasion of World Mental Health Day which is celebrated on 10th October every year. With an intent to sensitize the people, during a week long celebration, Nukkad Natak was performed on 11th October under the leadership of Prof Sangita Gupta, Head of the Department of Psychology and Dean Social Sciences. The event began with an address by Dr. Sarita Sood, Assistant Professor Department of Psychology wherein she mentioned the requirement of bringing change in the perspective of mental health from mental illness to mental wellness.
The Nukkad Natak titled ‘Jawaan’ written by Ms Sanampreet enlightened the troops and their families through a peek into the life of a soldier. Through their performance, the students of the Department of Psychology highlighted the mental health concerns that people face daily and could have a bearing on the life of an individual. The Nukkad Natak addressed the prime concerns and offered suggestions on how to deal with mental health difficulties. Further, it emphasized that there is a need to break the shackles of the stigma associated with seeking psychological help in the form of counselling. The take-home message was that getting timely support provides an ability to thrive despite the challenging environment. The audience appreciated the team for their performance. Such a performance is a great way to bring awareness and sensitize people towards the establishment of well-being.
The organizers felicitated the team with a memento for the effort that they had put in and for their remarkable performance before the troops and their families. The commendable step taken by the concerned officials to promote the well-being of the troops and their families is the harbinger of well-being. The Department of Psychology and Tiger Gunners recognizes the importance of mental well-being in the armed forces.
