The Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu, today organized a Public Lecture on “Border Management during Cross-LoC Trade and Bus Service” in the seminar hall of the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS).
The special lecture started by lightening of the lamp and paying tribute to the Bharat Mata. Director DSRS, Prof. Virender Koundal, formally welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the theme of the special lecture.
In his presentation titled "Managing Borders amid Cross-LoC Trade and Bus Services," Shri Promod Jain outlined the fundamental components of border management, encompassing security, peace, democracy, human rights, good governance, development, and cultural factors. He stressed the intricacies of border management during the 1990s and early 2000s, highlighting India's use of soft power to improve relations with Pakistan. Initiatives like Cross-LoC trade and the introduction of bus services played a crucial role in fostering cooperation in South Asia.
Shri Jain examined the ground realities of the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri and Poonch, exploring aspects such as topography, demographics, alienation, cross-LoC terrorism, radicalization, and governmental actions. He emphasized notable enhancements in border infrastructure, including fencing and technological advancements that benefit the armed forces. Initiatives like Operation Sadhbawana have promoted increased interaction and collaboration between the military and civilians, addressing local grievances.
Despite various challenges to border management and prevailing political atmosphere, Shri Jain argued for the mutual interest of India and Pakistan in maintaining normalcy in their relations. The expectation is for future stability, as neither country can afford the repercussions of heightened tensions leading to conflict.
