Department of Sociology, University of Jammu participated in the three days “Save Tawi Campaign”organised by JMC (Jammu Municipal Corporation) in collaboration with NSS (National Service Scheme), JU from 28th March to 30th March, 2023. It was an awareness cum cleanliness drive in which around 40 volunteers from the department of Sociology including students and faculty members participated.The purpose was to spread awareness and sensitize the public about the conservation of river Tawi, a lifeline of Jammu city. A large number of devotees visited the Tawi riverduring the last two days of the Navratri festival for immersion of Khetri/Sakh along with other religious material. They were made aware of their responsibility towards the preservation of this holy river by the volunteers.Few volunteers stood on the Tawi Bridge footpath holding placards that read– Save Surya Putri (Tawi), Say No to Polythene, while some volunteered at the banks of the river Tawi. They interacted with the public to make them aware of the harmful effects of mass bathing and immersion of non-biodegradable material into the river. The volunteers guided the devotees to separate the Saakh from other plastic materials and allowed only the immersion of Saakh in the river. The volunteers also shared their experience with the Mayor (JMC) Sh. Rajinder Sharma who visited the river Tawi. Department of Sociology has been participating in this noble cause andorganising this campaign twice every year during the culmination of the Navratri festival. Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head of the Department (Sociology) encouraged the students to participate in the event. Dr Hema Gandotra was the Teacher-in-charge for the event and it was coordinated by Ms Kajal Kalsi and Dr Gopal Krishan Sharma.Besides, students, scholars and faculty members of other departments of University of Jammu, including NSS (JU) volunteers also participated in the three days event.
