VCJU emphasises on  composite farming & land to lab approaches for future activities.

Yet another in a series of outreach and extension activities aiming for the welfare of farmer communities, Department of Zoology organized a farmer’s meet on “Technology Transfer from LAB to LAND” sponsored by J&K Science and Technology and Innovative Council. The Guest of Honor, president Border Belt Kisan Committee (BBKC) Sh. Ravi Kumar Bhau, along with more than 20 farmers of BBKC participated in the programme.

The Chief Guest for the Programme, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, Prof. Umesh Rai, highly appreciated the department for joining hand with farmers on the field and encouraged for composite farming and proposed for land to lab approaches for future activities. He congratulated the Head, Prof. Seema Langer, when she introduced various aqua-agro culture research work ongoing in the department. Prof. Langer explained the work done by the department on the emerging concept of Biofloc Technology and she also explained the Introduction of marine Prawns and Crab varieties, various preservation methods for increasing shelf life of fish and fish products e.g; fish noodles, wafers, chips etc. under value-added techniques. Further, she emphasized on technology transfer to the farmer and ongoing research work in new technologies related to Eco-friendly pest management using nematode, eco-friendly vermiculture and compost usage, use of zooplankton as natural fish food etc.

Prof. Seema Langer, Head, Department of Zoology, specifically thanked JK ST&IC, DST for sponsoring this event of lab to land aiming at uplifting the rural economy. Joint Director, JKST&IC, Mrs. Sunita Razdan was presiding the event and enthusiastically interacted with research scholars and encouraged them for entrepreneurial start-ups.

The guest speaker Dr. Pankaj, Division of Nematology, ICAR-IARI, Pusa, New Delhi delivered a lecture remotely on nematode diseases in various crops and a discussion on eco-friendly pest management followed by a successful interaction.

A display of various carps, prawns, crabs and vermicomposting, value-added products fishes like fish wafers and fish chips produced indigenously in the department were explained to the farmers and participants.

Highlight of this outreach and extension program was the visit to RakhBadoi, for the live demonstration on the “Biofloc Technology”shown to the farmer’s and participants by Sh. Karan Dev, a flourishing fish producer using Biofloc technology who explained the beneficial and practical aspects of this technique.

Farmers, Villagers, Sh. Karan Dev and the president of BBKC Sh. Ravi Kumar Bhau, shared their current difficulties on field.They thanked the department for organizing such events and putting efforts to bring the lab technologies to land which may address their problems.

Dr. Sarabjeet Kour, Sr. Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology conducted the proceedings of the programme which was attended by the faculty members, research scholars and staff of the department of Zoology.
