The Department of Sociology, University of Jammu, hosted a virtual power seminar on 8th March 2022 which was organised by the Centre for Women’s Studies in collaboration with ICT Academy The theme of the seminar was “Break the Bias”. The seminar was organised to commemorate International Women’s Day, 2022. The session began with a formal welcome of the resource persons Suhitha Maniyatha Chaldan, Director at Oracle, Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head of the Department (Sociology) and Director,Centre for Women’s Studies and Lovetesh Kumar, Project Manager, ICT Academy. The moderator Aadil extended his formal welcome to the keynote speakers and to all the participants including students, research scholars and faculty members from various departments. The Seminar was joined by Prof. Alka Sharma, Convenor, University Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre; Dr Hema Gandotra, Ms Kajal Kalsi, Dr Gopal Krishan Sharma and Ms Diksha Nargotra, Faculty Department of Sociology, University of Jammu. Prof. Vishav Raksha began the session by deliberating on the theme of “Break the Bias” and asserting how we all should strive to create a gender-neutral society. She highlighted her experience from her recent field trip and shared how society still needs to go a long way in evolving its gender perception and how a mental revolution is a must to achieve that goal. Further, another speaker Ms. Suhitha engaged the participants in a fruitful interactive session while reflecting on the theme of the day. She shared her experience of gender questions, deliberating on the ideas such as the Glass ceiling, gender discrimination etc. She also added how women need to stop being apologetic for their actions and learn to be more assertive in their decisions. This was followed by a healthy discussion in which the various faculty members, students and scholars shared their perceptions and personal experiences. The session culminated with a hope for an egalitarian society for all the genders and a future when a special day will not be needed to remind women of their equal status and to celebrate their contributions to society.
