Department of Sociology, JU culminates the two-week online Skill Course

The Department of Sociology, University of Jammu, culminated the two-week Online Skill Course yesterday with the thirteenth session which was followed by a Valedictory ceremony. The course was organised in collaboration with the University Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Centre (UESDC). The theme of the course was “Fostering Academic and Research Writing in Social Sciences”.  

The session began with a formal welcome of the resource person Dr Suresh Babu, Faculty at the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, School of Social Sciences (JNU). Prof. Vishav Raksha, Head of the Department (Sociology) and Skill Course Coordinator, extended her formal welcome to the keynote speaker and all the participants. Ms Kajal Kalsi, Faculty, Department of Sociology and Deputy Course Coordinator, formally introduced the resource person and carried on the further proceedings of the session. Dr Suresh deliberated on the “Challenges on doing Critical Research and Writings” and how to create a research space in academia. About fifty research scholars from various Social Science Departments of the University of Jammu participated in this skill course. 

The evening valedictory session was chaired by Prof. Jasbir Singh, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Jammu. Ms Kajal Kalsi presented the brief report of the entire sessions organised during the two weeks. 

In his valedictory remarks, Prof. Jasbir Singh congratulated the department of Sociology for taking the initiative to conduct this skill course. He also emphasised the significance of training research scholars for academic and research writing and appreciated the work of the organisers. The session was also attended by Prof. Alka Sharma, Convener, UESDC. She congratulated the Coordinators and the Department for successfully organising the course. She reiterated the importance of such skill courses and encouraged the organisation of these courses for all the research scholars of Jammu University. Prof Vishav Raksha also expressed her views and expressed her gratitude to Prof. Jasbir Singh and Prof. Alka Sharma for their constant support and for making this Skill course possible. She also encouraged the scholars to conduct quality research and not just be degree oriented. 

The scholars from the various departments of the University of Jammu shared their feedback and conveyed that they found the sessions to be highly insightful and educative. Many distinguished speakers from across the country participated in this skill course including Prof. S L Sharma, Prof. Jasbir Singh, Prof. Tulsi Patel, Prof. Vivek Kumar, Prof. Rajesh Gill, Prof. B K Nagla, Prof. Nilika Mehrotra, Prof. Satish Sharma, Prof. Vishav Raksha, Prof. R Indira, Dr Asutosh Pradhan and Dr Suresh Babu.

The proceedings of the session were conducted by Ms Kajal Kalsi. The technical and graphic modalities were supported by Mr Arif Paul.Among others who attended the session included Dr Hema Gandotra, Dr Gopal Krishan Sharma and Ms Diksha Nargotra, Faculty, Department of Sociology. The session culminated with a fruitful interaction among the faculty and participants and with a hope to organise many more such courses in future.
