Introduction

Established in 2001

The Department of Psychology was established in December 2001 under the aegis of the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences, University of Jammu, Jammu. The Department was set up as an interdisciplinary centre of higher learning and academic excellence. It has the distinction of being the first Post Graduate Department of Psychology in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is currently working under the faculty of Social Sciences. The department offers optional courses in the frontline areas of research namely Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Organizational Behavior at the postgraduate level. It also offers a  Ph.D program in Psychology. The teaching methodologies of the department are innovative and unique. The department provides quality teaching, practical experience and a unique opportunity to share and develop the vision, knowledge, initiative, and critical thinking needed to meet professional challenges and community needs. The Department actively encourages the faculty members, to attend refresher courses, to participate in training programmes, workshops, conferences and seminars in their areas of interest. The scholars and students of the department are also encouraged to participate in conferences, workshops, seminars, group discussions and various extension activities. Students qualifying the NET/JRF/SET and other competitive/civil services examinations are placed in various organizations and institutions within and outside the state.

Presently the department is headed by Prof. Sangita Gupta.

Thrust Areas

The thrust areas of research are Positive Psychology, Organizational Psychology and Clinical Psychology. The research in the department is focused on mental health issues, well-being, addiction, stress, character strengths, employee performance etc.

1: Experiential and participative learning

The department involves its students in experiential learning through fieldwork, internship, project/dissertation, and practicum.

2:  Extension/Outreach activities

The students contribute towards the betterment of society. With the active involvement of the students and faculty extension lectures are conducted to bring awareness about various psychological concerns.

3: Initiatives for an inclusive environment for students/staff

The department encourages the students/staff to participate in activities to promote harmony and tolerance towards cultural diversity. Department student gatherings and induction programs are organized. The students and staff of the department celebrate various festivals.

4: Emphasis on training for the development of skills

Regular hands-on training is imparted to the students to make them professional psychologists and enhance employability. Training programs and workshops are organized for students and scholars to enhance their skills for their professional development.

5: Student mentoring and counselling for academic and personal concerns

Faculty is allocated 5-6 students as a mentor to constantly follow student progress. Proper guidance and support is provided. Periodic reports are generated.
