Introduction

About the Department:-

Established in 1972, the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu, is the nodal office for organization of cultural, fine arts/ performing arts and literary activities, youth festivals, etc. The primary objective of the Department is to showcase the cultural and literary potential of the students at the regional, national and international level. In the past the Department of Students Welfare has organized UMANG – North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival – 2005 supported by the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, HARMONY – Inter-National Youth Festival – 2006 sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India, VIRASAT-E-RIYASAT – A State Universities Youth Festival, 2011and Udghosh- 30th Inter University North Zone Youth Festival, 2015. The students from different departments have also been invited to participate in international cultural exchange programmes visiting countries like USSR, South Korea, Russia and Bulgaria to display their talent.

The Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu organizes annual mega competition ‘Display Your Talent’, featuring different competitions of music, dance, literary, fine-arts and theatrical activities every year. All the departments and degree colleges/institutions/s affiliated to the University of Jammu are eligible to participate in this event. Around 1500 students from different departments/colleges participate in Display Your Talent. Every year the winners of various events of Display Your Talent get a chance to represent the University of Jammu in Inter-University North Zone and National Youth Festival competitions organized under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities. The winners of various events of Display Your Talent also get additional points for their achievements, which are added to their academic score and help them in getting admission in the P.G. Departments of University of Jammu on seats reserved under the cultural achievement category.

In addition, the Department is also organizing annual competitions/ programmes for students, scholars, teachers, non-teaching Staff and wards of the University employees. This helps to promote themselves and give them exposure to chisel their hidden talent. These programmes Lok Rang Mahotsav an annual competition of Folk Songs and Folk Dances for B.Ed Colleges affiliated with the University, Sauhard- Poster Making and Collage Making competition for research scholars, , Ahhlad-a short Story Writing , Essay Writing , Poetry Recitation , Flower Arrangement and Sketching competitions for students from different departments and affiliated colleges, Mitti-Di-Khushboo- a cultural event showcasing the local folk songs and folklore , Abhivyakti -a cultural competition (different events) for teaching and non-teaching employees of the University, Children’s Theatre Workshop-this is for the wards of the University employees during summer and winter vacations and so on.

On the beginning of new academic session every year the Department organizes Induction Programme for all the newly admitted students of the University to apprise them about the University functioning, rules, regulations, guidelines and the facilities provided to them so that they get aware of the ambience and also to avail maximum benefit of the time they spent in University.

Recently, the University of Jammu celebrated the Golden Jubilee year during which many cultural activities were organized by the Department of Students Welfare. The annual feature Display Your Talent was named as RangTrang-Display Your Talent. In the beginning the Department organized a quawali by Warsi Brothers – internationally acclaimed artists.

This year was full of challenges like Covid -19 affected the functioning of the University on all fronts. The Department of Students welfare took challenge for keeping students, teaching and non-teaching community busy so that they may not feel isolated and depressed. Many online programmes like special talks, lectures, competitions, interactions, Theatre workshops, singing and dance performances were organized which were enjoyed by one and all.
