Introduction (परिचयः)

The Department of Sanskrit was established in the year 1963 under the affiliation of Jammu University with a sole objective to promote Sanskrit in different sections of society. The founder teacher of the Department Prof. Shambhu Nath Sharma and the Padmashri Awardee of the Department is Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai. Rashtrapati awardees of the Department are Retd. Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai, Late. Prof. Kaushilya Walli, & Ret. Prof. Ram Partap. Ret.Prof. Purshotam Sharma selected as Emeritus Professor. Prof. Ram Bahadur (Shukla) has been awarded Abhinava abhinav Gupta Alankaran, by the Executive Council of AIOC in Oct. 12,2006 in Jammu Univeristy.  and Vidwatbhushan Purskar in 2023 by the Liuetnent Governer J&K UT. The Department is following the UGC syllabi With CBCS of the teaching of Post Graduate Classes for the session, Four specialization groups are being runing in the Department i.e. Epigraphy, Poetics, Philosophy and Linguistics. The main Aim of the Department is not only the teach the Sanskrit language and literature but also To enrich the eternal values to preserve ancient Indian Culture, with the establishment of Phonetic Laboratory, Department has the objective to involve the students and scholars with the new scientific trends to meet the modern development in society. To spread the Sanskrit language among the common people, department is also conducting Sanskrit Speaking course yearly. The tradition of creativity is still alive in the Department through research and there months self finance certificate course of Jyotish & Karmkand and the learning of sharda script.
