The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu organized the 5th workshop under the ongoing series for the students and scholars of the Department of Dogri on Wednesday, 11th October, 2023. Dr. Bindu Sangra, Faculty, The Law School, University of Jammu was the resource person.
On the outset, Prof. Sushma Sharma, officiating Head, Department of Dogri, welcomed all the participants and explained the importance of such workshops. She applauded the efforts and congratulated the Centre for providing the opportunity to be part of this Gender Sensitization Workshop.
Dr. Bindu Sangra, the key resource person for the workshop, spoke about Gender Justice. Through her presentation, she explained about the law and governance and how through these legal mechanisms, law and order is maintained in the society. She used the Global Gender Gap as an example to demonstrate how, despite several protections, women are still not aware of the fundamental rights that are guaranteed by our Constitution. She provided information about the unique laws and programs created exclusively for women to protect their rights, such as the Equal Remuneration Act, the Domestic Violence Act, the Right to Dignity and Decency, the Right to Free Legal Aid, and the Zero FIR. She encouraged the participants, particularly the female ones, to speak up for themselves and be conscious of their fundamental rights.
Prof. Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies in her concluding remarks explained the motive behind the conduct of such workshops. She stated that we must all respect the social differences that exist and comprehend that every person is unique, these differences shouldn't be the basis of social inequality and discrimination. She further added that because students are the front-runners of social change, we are attempting to instill gender sensitivity in them through workshops of this nature.
Students from the Department of Dogri very actively participated in the workshop, some of the students from The Law School also joined the workshop. The workshop was conducted and coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Kunzang Angmo both Faculty members, Centre for Women’s Studies. Dr. Padam Dev Singh and Dr. Sandeep Dubey both faculty of the Department of Dogri helped in coordinating and also looked after the digital modalities of the workshop.
