Introduction:

The Centre was formally launched in Feb, 2005 .Since then the Centre has been instrumental in promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching in the field of women studies with particular reference to Jammu region. It also acts as a forum for collaboration in the research and teaching of women studies both within the region and in conjunction with other institutions located outside. Over period of time, the Centre has also emerged as a nodal point in the region in terms of creation and dissemination of ideas leading to critical understanding of social sensitization on gender issues. It has also managed to fruitfully intervene in the growth of institutions which are working on issues relating to gender in general and women in particular.

Objective:

1. To contribute to the theoretical, methodological and pedagogical debates within the women studies in the context particularly of Jammu, through publications, conferences, workshops and teaching.

2. To provide a focus for research and teaching on women and gender in the University and to facilitate the development of interdisciplinary research in the area of women’s and gender studies.

3. To reach out to public areas where the issue of women come together with other political, artistic, and intellectual concerns. In addition to courses offered, the Centre also tries to engage students, faculty, and the community through guest lectures, conferences, and a host of other programme

4. To bring out refereed publications in high quality and useful areas of women studies.

5. Strengthening incorporation of Gender themes in the curriculum of Post Graduate & Undergraduate studies.

6. Promoting Gender sensitive work environment in the institutions of Higher Learning through Advocacy/Extension/Skill Development.

ACTIVITIES:

The Centre has been organizing large number of field and extension activities. It regularly organizes lectures, seminars, workshops on a wide range of subjects which has important bearing on the core area of Center’s activities. The following activities and programmes have been offered by the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu:-

Recent Activities :

 

1. Five days Training Workshop on “Personal Development Grooming through Aesthetic Skills”  (Skill Development Programme) on 22nd - 26th April, 2019 for Scholars & Women  Entrepreneurs from Jammu at Seminar Hall of Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu.

2. One day Awareness Programme on “Good Menstrual Hygiene” on 28th May, 2019 for Anganwari Workers & Adolescent Girls of R.S Pura Block at BDO Block, R.S Pura.

3. Three months Certificate Course on 1.Gender Issues 2.Women & Law w.e.f November, 2019 to Feburary,2020 at Seminar Hall of Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu

4. One day Workshop on “Gender Sensitization” on 22nd November, 2019 for Scholars and students of the faculty of Sciences, University of Jammu at the Seminar Hall, Department of  Political Science, University of Jammu.

5. One day Workshop on  “Gender Sensitization” on 28th November, 2019 for Scholars and students of the faculty of Social Sciences and Languages, University of  Jammu at Seminar Hall of CSEIP.

6. One day National Seminar on “Empowering Women through Entrepreneurship” organized by Centre for Women’s Studies and Skill & Enterpenureship Development Centre, University of Jammu in collaboration with National Commission for Women, Government of India , New Delhi on 21st  January, 2020 for  female students of the University of Jammu at Birg. Rajinder Singh Auditorium.

7. Nukkad Natak on the theme “Hamari Betiyaan”  to commemorate National Girl Child Dayon24thJanuary,  2020 for Scholars, Students and Staff of the University of Jammu in front of Dhanvantri Library, University of Jammu.

8. Nukkad Natak on the theme  “Hamari  Betiyaan”  to commemorate National Girl Child Day on 11th February, 2020 for Students and Staff of the College at Govt. Degree College R.S Pura, Jammu.

9. One day Workshop on “Gender Sensitization” in collaboration with Department of Hindi, University of Jammu on 13th February, 2020 for Students of the Department of Hindi, University of Jammu at Seminar Hall of  Department of Hindi, University of Jammu.

10. One day Workshop on” Gender Sensitization” in collaboration with Department of Economics, University of Jammu on 18th February, 2020 for Scholars and students of the  Department of Economics, University of Jammu at Seminar Hall of CWS.

11. One day Workshop on “Gender Sensitization” in collaboration with Department of Psychology, University of Jammu on 20th February, 2020 for Scholars and students of the. Department of Psychology, University of Jammu at Seminar Hall of Department of Psychology, University of Jammu.

12. One day Workshop on “Gender Sensitization” in collaboration with Department of Political Science, University of Jammu on 25th February, 2020 for Students of the Department of Political Science, University of Jammu at Seminar Hall of  Department of  Political Science, University of Jammu.

13. Poster Making & Slogan Writing Competition on the occasion of International Women’s Day 5th March, 2020 for Students and scholars of the University of Jammu at Seminar Halls of CWS &  CSEIP.                                  

 

Three months Certificate Courses: The Centre for Women’s Studies conducted two, three months Certificate Courses namely a) Gender Issues b) Women and Law w.e.f October to December, 2018.

To celebrate the International Women’s Day, a lecture under the Thematic Lecture Series on “Women and Ideology of Terrorism” was delivered by Sh. Rahul Jalali an eminent Journalist, on 8th March, 2019.

Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu in collaboration with Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Jammu Chapter organized 15 days workshop on “Skill Enhancement and New Product Development ( Calico Printing) w.e.f 3rd September,2018 to 17th September,2018 in the Seminar Hall of the Centre for Women’s Studies.

Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu in collaboration with Gandhi Peace Foundation Jammu Chapter and Gandhi Global Family J&K organized an Interactive Session on the theme “Bridges of Dialogue” on 29th October, 2018 with 25 Women Peace Volunteers from different walks of life, states, religion-caste and Class.

Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu in collaboration with department of History organized Two Days National Seminar on “Resituating the life and Contribution of Maharaja Hari Singh on 22nd -23rd October, 2018

A) Three months Certificate Courses:

The Centre for Women’s Studies conducts two, three months Certificate Courses namely a) Gender Issues since 2006 and b) Women and Law since 2012 every year. 

B) Extension Activities (Field Action) :

The Centre organized extension activities (Workshops) on regular basis in different areas for different target groups like for Community women, Anganwari Workers and Supervisors, Self Help Groups(SHG’s), school, colleges on various women related themes:- 

a) Nutrition and Health Concerns among Adolescent Girls on 25th January 2016 at Bishnah, Jammu.

b) Women Empowerment: Opportunities and Challenges on 18th March, 2016 at University of Jammu.

c) Converting the Research scripts to print on 18th January, 2017 in the university.

d) Save the Girl Child on 24th January in the University and another program at RKS Girls High Secondary School Bishnah, Jammu.

e) To celebrate International Women’s Day a Signature campaign on I Stand Against Sexual Harassment, I Stand for Gender Equality on 8th March, 2017.

f) Gender Sensitization among Youth on 12th August, 2017 at University (DDE).

g) Gender Sensitization among Community Women on 4th September, 2017 at SOS, Gole Gujral Jammu. 

C) Lecture Series on:- 

a) Women and Bhakti in Early India: Spirituality and Quest for Liberation by R. Mahalakhmi on 14th December 2016 at University of Jammu.

b) Status of Women in India and Women’s Studies Centre by Dr. Anjali Deshpande on 24th April, 2017 at University of Jammu.

c) Foregrounding Women Performers: Gender and Caste Politics by Lata Singh on 8th Septenber, 2017 at University of Jammu. 

D) Interactive Sessions:- 

a) Mapping Women’s Studies across India on 14th September, 2015 at University of Jammu.

b) Women, Gender and Stress on 14th December, 2015 at University of Jammu.

c) Violence against Women: Causes and Remedies on 22nd December, 2015 at University of Jammu.

d) Facing Day to Day Challenges on 23rd January, 2018 at Louis Braille Memorial School for Sightless Girls at Roop nagar Jammu.

e) The Rights of Women on 8th March, 2018 at SOS Home Gole Gujral, Jammu. 

E) Training Programme:-

a) Training Program on Yoga: A Step towards Wellness from 15th to 21st June 2015 at University of Jammu.

b) Two Yoga Training programme one at University of Jammu from 14th June to 21st June, 2016 and second at Anganwari Centre, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu from 22nd June to 29th June 2016. 

F) Seminar: - Two days National Seminar in collaboration with ICSSR on Women’s Studies: Theories and Practice in Special Reference to Jammu Region on 20th -21st March, 2017 at University of Jammu. 

G) Project:-  Multidisciplinary project (04) on the theme “Towards an Understanding of Women of Jammu Region: A multi-disciplinary perspective” was initiated by Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu in 2017

  1. A lecture on “Status of Women in India and Women Studies Centre” was deliverd by Dr. Anjali Deshpande. Apart from being an academician of repute, she is currently Member of UGC Standing Committee on Women’s Studies and Member of Central Advisory Board of Education (Ministry of HRD) on 24th April, 2017 at Seminar Hall of Department of Political Science, University of Jammu.
     
  2. One day Awareness Programme on “Gender Sensitization among Youth” was organized by the Centre in collaboration with NSS Campus Unit at Directorate of Distance Education on 12th August 2017
     
  3. One day workshop on “Gender Sensitization among the Community Women” on 4th September 2017 at SOS, Gole Gujral, Jammu.
     
  4. A second Lecture under the thematic lecture series was delivered by Dr. Lata Singh who is currently the Chairperson of the Centre for Women’s Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on the topic “Foregrounding Women Performers: Gender and Caste Politics” on 8th September, 2017 at Seminar Hall, Department of Political Science, University of Jammu.
     
  5. To celebrate National Girl Child Day (24th) an Interactive Session was organized by Centre for Women’s Studies on the theme “Facing Day to Day Challenges” on 23rd January, 2018 at Louis Brallie Memorial School for Sightless Girls at Roop Nagar, Jammu.
     
  6. In continuation of the programme celebrating National Girl Child Day (24th), a Poetry Recitation and Interactive Session was organized by Centre for Women’s Studies on 24th January, 2018 in University of Jammu.
     
  7. To celebrate International Women’s Day(8th March), Centre for Women’s Studies organized an awareness programme on “The Rights of Women” on 8th March, 2018 at SOS Home Gole Gujral, Jammu.
     
  8. One day programme on the theme “Gender Concerns Reflected through Poetry” was organized by Centre on 21st July, 2018 at Seminar Hall of Department of Political Science, University of Jammu.
     
  9. One day Interactive Session was organized by Centre for Women’s Studies on “Women and Health Care” on 9th August, 2018 at Community Hall, Trilokprur, Block Marh, Jammu.
